A monumental ruling by the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston today declared?the Defense of Marriage Act, the national law that declared marriage as a union "between one man and one woman," unconstitutional. The ruling sets the stage for DOMA?to be taken up by the U.S. Supreme Court, which could lead to federal approval of same-sex marriages.?

According to The Boston Globe,?Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley said: "Today's landmark ruling makes clear once again that DOMA is a discriminatory law for which there is no justification. It is unconstitutional for the federal government to create a system of first- and second-class marriages, and it does harm to families in Massachusetts every day."?
