Video game review: Resident Evil 6-for the zombie slayer in you ...
Like the undead monstrosities it features in its games, Capcom?s Resident Evil franchise refuses to die. Originally known as ?BioHazard? in its native Japan, the survival horror series has withstood the test of time and chugged out hits and sequels that continue to attract more players to the bioweapon hunting cause. ?
?
The franchise has seen many changes through the years, and from its humble beginnings as a 3rd person perspective action game, it has evolved into a ?Survival Action? run-and-gun platformer that dares to turn up the heat and tension all at the same time.?
?
With the philosophy of ?No Hope Left? at its core, Resident Evil 6 features three main scenarios that fleshes out the story through different perspectives. Series favorites Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield return, with their own main scenarios and partners to assist them in the forms of Helena Harper and Piers Nivans respectively.?
?
The third scenario focuses on a new protagonist named ?Jake Muller?, who also happens to be the son of series? antagonist, the late Albert Wesker (he died in Resident Evil 5). He?ll be partnered up with Sherry Birkin, a familiar face from Resident Evil 2 who now works as a US government agent like her fellow Raccoon City survivor Mr. Kennedy.?
?
Any of the three scenarios can be played from the start, and players can choose whether to play solo with an AI player or with another gamer via an online connection.
?
The events of RE 6 take place during a timeline spanning from December 2012 to mid-2013. A new biological threat known as the ?C-Virus? has spread and is causing havoc in different parts of the world, forcing the protagonists to intervene and put a stop to the madness in their respective situations.?
?
Leon and Helena partner up to stop National Security Adviser Derek Simmons; Chris pairs with his subordinate Piers to quell bioterrorism and avenge his BSAA comrades; and Sherry is assigned to protect Jake, who holds within his body the key which can stop the C-Virus once and for all.?
?
All adventures intersperse and connect to the timeline as the player plays through the game, unlocking a fourth scenario in the process that details the story of one Ada Wong, another familiar face from the RE mythos.
?
Gameplay wise, Resident Evil 6 plays very much like recent installments, but borrows heavily from another third-person shooter ? namely Gears of War. ?A noticeable improvement, the ability to move and shoot, is evidence of this influence, as well as sprinting forward, ducking, and sliding through to cover or traverse obstacles.?
?
While this certainly looks like a plus, several other problems do arise with the change, and RE6 has quite the number under its belt for even the most unseasoned not to notice. Partner assists from RE5 returns, and while the AI is tolerable, it?s a dominant gameplay factor that works better with co-op involved. Also, Quick Time Events are harder to pull off, making it a cumbersome experience rather than a joy to play. The herb system and inventory system have improved to a point, but it?s easier to manage weapons on the go rather than other miscellaneous items. All this happens in real-time, so there?s no magic box or attach? case to suspend the game midway.
?
Like a greatest hits collection record, Resident Evil 6 brings together the usual suspects and monstrous tropes the franchise has seen through the years. Zombies, Plagas-type monsters, and other biohazard creatures invade and make sure your path is a living hell from start to finish.?
?
These aren?t your average grunts either, as all behave and attack in groups now and then. Most enemies also have the ability to mutate and augment their strength given significant damage and trauma. What?s more, QTE attacks also chip away on life easily depending on the game?s difficulty setting. Overall, it?s not a walk in the park to play RE6, let alone facing the numerous and challenging boss fights the game carries along with it.
?
In terms of its place in video game history, the Resident Evil series has proven time and again to be a certified hit in the action-adventure gaming genre. RE6 is no exception, and holds up well against the series? other editions.?
?
However, the flaws do carry with it the burden and concern as to how much the storyline can be stretched further. This will leave a dividing line between fans of the series and newbies. Groundbreaking the game is not, but it?s not a bad title to pick up either if you have nothing better to play. If you?re money?s on slaying zombies and other monstrosities as well as seeing familiar faces from the franchise, this one?s for you. ? DVM, GMA News
