Olympic Games Gold Medallist Anna Meares and Paralympian Matthew Cowdrey have won awards in South Australia.

London Olympic Games Gold Medallist Anna Meares and Australia's most successful Paralympian Matthew Cowdrey have won awards in South Australia.

The cyclist and swimmer were recognised for their achievements at the 2012 South Australian Sport Institute (SASI) awards on Monday night.

Recreation and Sport Minister, Tom Kenyon says both athletes, who respectively became SASI Female Athlete of the Year and SASI Male Athlete of the Year, have inspired not only South Australians but all Australians with their achievements in London this year.

Matthew Cowdrey also was named the SASI Male Athlete of the Year with a Disability.

'Their inspiration is not just from their success but also from their personal journeys, their challenges and most importantly, their outstanding characters,' Mr Kenyon said in a statement on Tuesday.
