The New Brady Bill
As I'm sure most of you know, President Obama intends to reinstate the Brady Bill, but revise it to be even more strict. I would like to have a civil discussion about gun control, and get people's thoughts on the subject.
I'm sure you all know my position on the subject. Blaming guns for acts of violence is like blaming cars for drunk drivers. A gun is an inanimate piece of metal, and will not hurt anybody if just left on a table. Everything depends on the intention of the user.
This letter from Sheriff Mueller of Linn Co., OR, exactly sums up my feelings. I'm all for more comprehensive background checks, because that will stop most of these public rampages by mentally unsound individuals. We don't need more laws, we need better enforcement of the laws already in place, and we need to identify 'hot spots' and work to make them safer. Schools are often targeted because they are 'gun free' zones and the shooters know that there will be no one to oppose them. Teachers should be armed and trained to respond to dangerous and deadly situations. If not with guns, then at least with tasers and pepper spray, or something so they can put up a fight instead of cowering in classrooms.
But the solution is not to go turning law abiding citizens into criminals.
Although this article deals specifically with guns and video games, the author makes several really good points concerning American culture.
And now, your thoughts, please.
