Why people fail to make money from writing e-books
Article by Joseph Escott
There are many reasons why people fail to make money from writing e-books. Most of those reasons are related to the individual?s disposition rather than any problems they may encounter within the e-book industry itself.
First, most individuals entering the e-book industry do so without fully understanding what it is they want to achieve from writing and publishing their e-books. Certainly, for many, the desire to earn a little extra money from writing e-books will be a motivating factor. However, earning money should not be the only goal if you want to succeed as a profitable e-book author.
If you want to make money from writing and publishing e-books, then you need to have a multiplicity of interconnecting goals which are both inspirational and supportive of your efforts. But before you can establish those interconnecting goals you must first identify a principle goal, one which is not founded on just making money.
For example, if you are passionate about writing stories for children, then let this be your principle goal from which all your other goals can flow. Passion, after all, is the wellspring of human innovation. It is our passion that drives us towards excellence. Excellence equals recognition and recognition equals reward.
Earning money from writing should be seen as a reward rather than an inspirational driver behind the desire to succeed as an e-book author.Second, becoming a successful e-book author takes time, energy and, above all, a lot of patience. Impatience is probably the biggest contributing factor towards people giving up on being an e-book author. Being passionate about the topic you have chosen to write about will give you an infinite source of patience.
If you decide to become an e-book author, then be prepared for a lot of hard work over a long period of time. Even though there are no guarantees that your efforts will be successful, patience and determination will definitely swing the odds in your favor.
Third, becoming a successful e-book author is not just about writing. It is also about your willingness to learn the art of selling e-books. Quite a few wannabe e-book authors overlook this fact, and as a consequence they fail to get beyond first base.
Buying e-books is a very different experience to the one most of us encounter at a bookstore where glitzy packaging entices us to buy the book. The Internet does not have that touchy feely experience about it. Instead, e-books must rely on targeting and meeting the specific needs of potential customers. Learning about what works or does not work in e-book sales is therefore imperative to your success as an e-book author. The best way to learn the art of selling e-books is to study the methods employed by the more successful and experienced e-book sellers. Taking note of what the professionals do will give you a solid base of knowledge from which you can develop your own ideas.
Fourth, choosing the right e-book niche is vitally important if you are to succeed as an e-book author. So many wannabe e-book authors have a tendency to jump on the band wagon of a hot topic because they have heard there is money to be made from writing about it. This is a fatal mistake and one which should be avoided.
As a newbie author, you do not want to enter a market already saturated by competitors. Entering a very competitive market will simply overwhelm you. Instead, you should survey the e-book landscape before you take the plunge. Choose something that matches your passion, talent and your demeanor. Market research will prevent you from making wrong and costly decisions.
And finally, the e-book industry is about exchanging specific information and ideas, not about generalizations. Many wannabe e-book authors enter the industry thinking that any old hat will suffice in order to make them successful. This kind of approach to e-book authorship only adds to the clutter that already exists on the information highway.
Try to think of the e-book industry as a conduit for building your reputation as an authority on your chosen specialty. The more authority you can bring to your writing, the more value you add to the information you wish to impart to your readers. It is your reputation as an authority on a given topic which generates income, not your ability to regurgitate information that already exists in the public domain. In short, be a innovator to your readers and not just another member of the crowd.
