Who are you outside of work?

No matter where I am, I am a wordie. Whichever way you cut it, I love words. Games, dialogue, debates, writing ? anything that relates to words -> count me in! Even with music; I always listen for the lyrics.

I?m moved by issues of social justice. In fact, my writing career began with causes ? organizations, charities and initiatives that helped people who couldn?t speak for themselves. These are still important to me today.

I?m committed to open, direct and honest (but kind) communication. I think this arises from my family life. With my partner, we?ve raised almost 5 children (I say almost, because one is still at home with us). Together we learned to communicate authentically. That was a challenge!

Aside from words, I love my garden and my cat. Gardening is my zen escape. During gardening season, you?ll find me in my Wellies in my community garden plot; usually digging weeds.

What motivated you to start your business or choose your profession?

Sounds crazy I know, but I feel as though my profession chose me. I?ve tried a few things but I have always come back to words.

I did begin as a grant writer and communications specialist (donor letters, newsletters, reports and proposal writing). I did make a conscious decision to move to online communications because I was interested in learning a new medium. I could apply my experience with business communications. At the same time, I had to learn new technical skills. I loved that!

How do you overcome business challenges or obstacles?

Do you have an hour? Seriously, I probably overcome challenges by seeking counsel from a few trusted colleagues. Or I will read pick up a business leadership book. Or I will now seek to share with this group of women. Once I?ve gathered some information/counsel, I will reflect and mull over options.

If I can?t crack the nut with resources within my circle, I will hire someone to help me.

What are your greatest strengths?

My greatest strengths are my communications skills, my commitment to collaboration and my love of learning.

What are your favourite business tools?

My iPhone, my computer, my website and Buffer for social media.

What are you most passionate about?

If you are asking in terms of values, I am most passionate about respect, integrity, excellence and continual improvement.

If you are asking what I am passionate about as a pursuit ? I am passionate about gardening, my cat (sorry I couldn?t resist), reading superb writing and writing superbly (I try).

Who is your greatest business mentor and why?

Anita Roddick ? founder of The Body Shop. She was a successful entrepreneur who was also an activist and environmentalist.
