The United States generated $957 million in revenue in 2008 from online dating services. The U.S. online dating market increased spending to $932 million in 2011. A social networking service is an online service, platform, or site that focuses on facilitating the building of social networks or social relations among people who, for example, share interests, activities, backgrounds, or real-life connections. A social network service consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Most social network services are web-based and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging.? Put simply, social networking is a way for one person to meet up with other people on the net. People use social networking sites for meeting new friends, finding old friends, or locating people who have the same problems or interests they have, called niche networking.

More and more relationships and friendships are being formed online and then carried to an offline setting. Psychologist and University of Hamburg professor Erich H. Witte says that relationships which start online are much more likely to succeed. Witte has said that in less than 10 years, online dating will be the predominant way for people to start a relationship.? ?One online dating site claims that 2% of all marriages begin at its site, the equivalent of 236 marriages a day. Other sites claim 1 in 5 relationships begin online.

Social networking sites play a vital role in this area as well. Being able to meet someone as a ?friend? and see what common interests you share and how you have built up your friend base and ?likes? you can truly see a fuller picture of the person you are talking with. Online Dating

Social networking and relationships tend to go hand in hand in this generation.? People meet online EVERYDAY, B.? I remember when meeting someone online was once looked down upon.? Now online dating is pretty much universally accepted and expected.? I remember I met a female once online and brought her around my parents after we had been dating for several months.? Anybody that knows my Pops knows he will talk your head off and ask you a million questions.? So I brought this female friend of mine to dinner one Saturday evening and my Pops was drilling her, all out of fun though.? So he asks the forbidden question I was trying to avoid answering all day?.?where did you meet my son at??? Mannnnnn my heart started pumping hard and I felt little sweat beads popping up on my forehead.? It had to be at least ten people in the room and they were all having their own conversation but as soon as he asked that question the whole room got quiet and all eyes were on us.? I swear you could hear two ants doing the oochie coochie in the dining room it was so quiet.? With a smile on her face and with no shame she softly says, ?Facebook.?? I turned to look out the window because I didn?t want to see the reaction on everybody?s face. ??After she said it there was about another 5 seconds of pure silence and with mad enthusiasm my Pops reply, ?dang Ryan, you be meeting them everywhere don?t you??? Now at this point I don?t know which is worse, the fact that everybody knew I met her on Facebook or the fact that my Pops make it seem like I meet a ton of women in front of the woman I was dating.? To my surprise I was not judged, now they may have said something amongst each other to where I couldn?t hear it but no one pulled me to the side and asked me what I was doing meeting women online.? At this point I realized if my older and traditional family members didn?t have a problem with online dating then nobody should.

Social websites have probably ruined more relationships than it has started.? Hell it pretty much ruined one of mine.? At least the true colors and capabilities of that individual were shown but that?s a totally different story.? Some folks can?t deal with their significant other talking to individuals of the opposite sex, liking statuses and/or pictures, or leaving compliments.? Honestly, I can see how some wouldn?t like it but at the same time I feel it?s a little overboard especially if it?s harmless.? Maybe they?re just jealous or insecure?who knows?? Maybe pass relationships or YOU made them insecure.? If you get to the point were you?re hacking into your significant others account just to read messages they have received/sent or actually sending messages to folks you?ve seen your mate communicating ?with then I?d recommend you end that relationship.? Why?? Because the trust isn?t there anymore and from my experiences once the trust is gone the relationship is on a downhill spiral and things are only going to get worse?TRUST ME!!!? I?d advise you to get out before anyone gets hurt even worse. ?Now if you plan on ending that said relationship and just looking for ammo to do it then by all means have at it but I always say don?t look for what you don?t want to find.

Social sites can be a great way to meet someone especially if you aren?t a socialite and rarely have time to go out and meet new people.? Some folks just feel more comfortable in front of their keyboard and I don?t consider them weird because there are plenty more just like them.? Whatever works for you, I say have at it.? My only suggestion is to be careful to not let it ruin your relationship by any means necessary even if that means you have to delete accounts.

MIT researchers revisit data from a seminal online experiment but draw much more encouraging conclusions

In 2004, a trio of researchers at Columbia University began an online experiment in social-media marketing, creating nine versions of a music-download site that presented the same group of unknown songs in different ways. The goal of the experiment was to gauge the effect of early peer recommendations on the songs' success; the researchers found that different songs became hits on the different sites and that the variation was unpredictable.

"It's natural to believe that successful songs, movies, books and artists are somehow 'better,'" one of the researchers wrote in The New York Times in 2007. "What our results suggest, however, is that because what people like depends on what they think other people like, what the market 'wants' at any point in time can depend very sensitively on its own history."

But for music fans who would like to think that talent is ultimately rewarded, the situation may not be as dire as the Columbia study makes it seem. In a paper published in the online journal PLoS ONE, researchers from the MIT Media Laboratory's Human Dynamics Lab revisit data from the original experiment and suggest that it contains a clear quantitative indicator of quality that's consistent across all the sites; moreover, they find that the unpredictability of the experimental results may have as much to do with the way the test sites were organized as with social influence.

Numbers game

In their analysis, Alex "Sandy" Pentland, the Toshiba Professor of Media Arts and Science, his graduate students Coco Krumme first author on the new paper and Galen Pickard, and Manuel Cebrian, a former postdoc at the Media Lab, developed a mathematical model that, while simple, predicts the experimental results with high accuracy. They divide the decision to download a song into two stages: first, the decision to play a sample of the song, and second, the ensuing decision to download it or not. They found that, in fact, the percentage of customers who would download a given song after sampling it was consistent across sites. The difference in download totals was due entirely to the first stage, the decision to sample a song in the first place.

And that decision, the researchers concluded, had only an indirect relationship to the songs' popularity. In the original experiment, one of the sites was a control, while the other eight gave viewers information about the popularity of the songs, measured by total number of downloads. But on those eight sites, the number of downloads also determined the order in which the songs were displayed. The MIT researchers' analysis suggests that song ordering may have had as much to do with the unpredictability across sites as the popularity information.

"We've known forever that people are lazy, and they'll pick the songs on the top," Pentland says. "There's all this hype about new-age marketing and social-media marketing. Actually, it comes down to just the stuff that they did in 1904 in a country store: They put certain things up front so you'd see them."

Quality, not quantity

In their work, the MIT researchers interpret the likelihood that sampling a song will result in its being downloaded as a measure of quality. Since that measure was consistent across sites, using it, rather than volume of downloads, to order song listings would probably mitigate some of the unpredictability that the Columbia researchers found.

Even on sites where the number of downloads determines song ordering, high-quality songs will gradually creep up the rankings, because, by definition, they net more downloads per sample than low-quality songs do. But "it does take a long time for the market to fully equilibrate," Krumme says. "Precisely how long it would take for the highest-quality songs to rise to the top depends on the specifics of a particular market."

Faults show Lake Tahoe area's shaky past

As a cross-country skier trekked through the wilderness near Lake Tahoe 15 years ago, he noticed something odd about the trail he'd taken. The hill crest that had been beneath his skis abruptly dropped off, then picked up again about 20 feet away.

As luck would have it, the skier was a geologist, and the oddities of that trail ? including the offset moraines, or ancient glacial deposits, he noticed that day ? helped him piece together the seismic hazards underlying the Lake Tahoe region.

"As you walk along these very prominent geologic features, all of the sudden, that same feature is now over there," said James Howle, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Carnelian Bay, Calif. "These long, linear moraines are very abruptly offset, and I couldn't help but ask, 'What caused that?'"

Howle has been studying the region ever since. He's now identified five active seismic faults, which point to important landslide and earthquake hazards ? potentially up to magnitude-6.9 temblors ? for those living near Lake Tahoe.

Finding faults
Together, the five faults make up the Tahoe-Sierra Frontal Fault Zone, which lies between the Sierra Nevada and the west side of Lake Tahoe. Geologists had known about several of these faults before Howle's latest findings, which were detailed online May 18 in the journal Geological Society of America Bulletin, but heavy tree and brush cover made the area difficult to survey.

Using LiDAR, a type of laser radar that can "see" through dense vegetation, Howle's team precisely traced the five faults and measured their offsets, or the distances seismic activity had moved land on each side of the faults. They also found, from radioisotope data, that the glacial moraines in the region were 21,000 and 70,000 years old ? an important piece of the puzzle that scientists hadn't known before, Howle said.

The data allowed Howle's team to calculate how fast the land along the faults is moving. The rates they calculated are two to three times greater than had been estimated, he said. [ 13 Crazy Earthquake Facts ]

Those slip rates boil down to significant seismic risks. A rupture along any of the five faults could generate a magnitude-6.3 to 6.6 quake, the team calculated. If two or more adjacent faults ruptured together, they could produce a magnitude-6.9 or greater quake.

"The seismic hazard itself hasn't increased," Howle told OurAmazingPlanet. "The faults have always been there, the hazard has always been there, we just didn't have the data to quantify it until now."

What do the findings mean for those who call Lake Tahoe home? Be prepared, advised Howle, who lives in the area and has no plans to relocate.

The faults have not produced any major quakes since people have been living in the region, but that doesn't mean they won't, he said. The team doesn't have enough evidence to determine exactly how often earthquakes recur along these faults, but Howle estimates it's on the timescale of thousands of years. Since they don't know when the last quake occurred, the next could hit at any time.

What's more, earthquakes aren't the only danger. The team's LiDAR images show evidence of massive ancient land and rockslides associated with the quakes.

"It's kind of a latent hazard, and people don't take it seriously because there hasn't been much seismic activity here in historical times," Howle said. "But these new data clearly show the faults are active. They haven't ruptured while we've been around here, but they have been active in recent geologic time."

You walk along the shore and spot a weatherworn bottle tossing about in the spume. Curious, you scoop it up and are delighted to discover a handwritten message inside?a message penned long, long ago in a land far, far away.

We love message-in-a-bottle stories. Messages intrigue us, especially messages that journey through time.

You have a message, you know. Everybody has a message?some wisdom they?re meant to share. If you could express but one idea?one concept?one pearl of wisdom near and dear to your heart, what would your message be?

Some people feel they have a personal calling to share their message with a larger audience than, say, with their friends and family.? These ?messengers? have an intuitive sense that spreading their insight is part of their mission?their purpose in life?even if they?re not yet crystal clear on what their message is or who is meant to receive it.

Messengers often naturally gravitate toward speaking, writing, and teaching as a means of communicating their wisdom and insight; others express themselves through art, music, dance, theatre, film . . .

Remember this. If you are a messenger, you have a responsibility to deliver your message!

Stop thinking about self-perceived inadequacies.

Just prepare your message, carefully choose which bottle to place it in, and lovingly and deliberately toss it out to sea. Somebody somewhere is waiting to receive it!

Discovery of historical photos sheds light on Greenland ice loss

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? A chance discovery of 80-year-old photo plates in a Danish basement is providing new insight into how Greenland glaciers are melting today.

Researchers at the National Survey and Cadastre of Denmark -- that country's federal agency responsible for surveys and mapping -- had been storing the glass plates since explorer Knud Rasmussen's expedition to the southeast coast of Greenland in the early 1930s.

In this week's online edition of Nature Geoscience, Ohio State University researchers and colleagues in Denmark describe how they analyzed ice loss in the region by comparing the images on the plates to aerial photographs and satellite images taken from World War II to today.

Taken together, the imagery shows that glaciers in the region were melting even faster in the 1930s than they are today, said Jason Box, associate professor of geography and researcher at the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State. A brief cooling period starting in the mid-20th century allowed new ice to form, and then the melting began to accelerate again in the 2000s.

"Because of this study, we now have a detailed historical analogue for more recent glacier loss," Box said. "And we've confirmed that glaciers are very sensitive indicators of climate."

Pre-satellite observations of Greenland glaciers are rare. Anders Anker Bj?rk, doctoral fellow at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and lead author of the study, is trying to compile all such imagery. He found a clue in the archives of The Arctic Institute in Copenhagen in 2011.

"We found flight journals for some old planes, and in them was a reference to National Survey and Cadastre of Denmark," Bj?rk said.

As it happens, researchers at the National Survey had already contacted Bj?rk about a find of their own.

"They were cleaning up in the basement and had found some old glass plates with glaciers on them. The reason the plates were forgotten was that they were recorded for mapping, and once the map was produced they didn't have much value."

Those plates turned out to be documentation of Rasmussen's 7th Thule Expedition to Greenland. They contained aerial photographs of land, sea and glaciers in the southeast region of the country, along with travel photos of Rasmussen's team.

The researchers digitized all the old images and used software to look for differences in the shape of the southeast Greenland coastline where the ice meets the Atlantic Ocean. Then they calculated the distance the ice front moved in each time period.

Over the 80 years, two events stand out: glacial retreats from 1933-1934 and 2000-2010. In the 1930s, fewer glaciers were melting than are today, and most of those that were melting were land-terminating glaciers, meaning that they did not contact the sea.

Those that were melting retreated an average of 20 meters per year -- the fastest retreating at 374 meters per year. Fifty-five percent of the glaciers in the study had similar or higher retreat rates during the 1930s than they do today.

Still, more glaciers in southeast Greenland are retreating today, and the average ice loss is 50 meters per year. That's because a few glaciers with very fast melting rates -- including one retreating at 887 meters per year -- boost the overall average.

But to Box, the most interesting part of the study is what happened between the two melting events.

From 1943-1972, southeast Greenland cooled -- probably due to sulfur pollution, which reflects sunlight away from Earth.

Sulfur dioxide is a poisonous gas produced by volcanoes and industrial processes. It has been tied to serious health problems and death, and is also the main ingredient in acid rain. Its presence in the atmosphere peaked just after the Clean Air Act was established in 1963. As it was removed from the atmosphere, the earlier warming resumed.

The important point is not that deadly pollution caused the climate to cool, but rather that the brief cooling allowed researchers to see how Greenland ice responded to the changing climate.

The glaciers responded to the cooling more rapidly than researchers had seen in earlier studies. Sixty percent of the glaciers advanced during that time, while 12 percent were stationary. And now that the warming has resumed, the glacial retreat is dominated by marine-terminating outlet glaciers, the melting of which contributes to sea level rise.

"From these images, we see that the mid-century cooling stabilized the glaciers," Box said. "That suggests that if we want to stabilize today's accelerating ice loss, we need to see a little cooling of our own."

Southeast Greenland is a good place to study the effects of climate change, he explained, because the region is closely tied to air and water circulation patterns in the North Atlantic.

"By far, more storms pass through this region -- transporting heat into the Arctic -- than anywhere else in the Northern Hemisphere. Climate change brings changes in snowfall and air temperature that compete for influence on a glacier's net behavior," he said.

Should Governments Tax Puppy Love? | Psychology Today

Italian politicians have learned a lesson that everyone should have already known ? namely you should not mix taxes and love. To understand the context of this event you must know that Italy, like many other countries across the entire euro zone, is struggling to revive its economy and reduce its public debt. ?This is a predicament which has prompted the country's lawmakers to try to dream up new revenue-raising measures. Still they should have known that no matter how bad the economic crisis is, a population can be pushed only so far.

Early on Friday May 18 people awoke to hear startling news. Specifically a parliamentary commission had proposed a tax levy on pet cats and dogs to raise revenue for their debt ridden cities and towns. The surprising thing about it was that this tax was clearly proposed on the basis of the emotional bond that people have with their pets. This became clear when the wording of the proposed no tax did not say that it was on cats and dogs, but rather that the new tax was to be on domestic "animals of affection." I can think of several other countries in which people would have likely tried to get around such a levy by responding to that specific wording and simply claiming that they had no affection for the dog or cat living in their home, and therefore they should be exempt from the tax. However the Italian response was much less subtle and much more vocal.

The public outcry was instantaneous and vigorous. Within the first four hours after the announcement, one news agency had broadcast nearly 40 reports and interviews on the issue. The first people to chime in with their opinion were animal rights groups, who claimed that in this already cash strapped economy people might be forced to abandon their animals due to an inability to pay additional taxes for them. They warned that the loss of a loved dog or cat in this way would result in a deeper national depression than that which was caused current monetary crisis.

Next came a string of politicians all voicing opinions against the new proposed tax. One elected official called the idea "grotesque," another called it "idiotic," while a third called it ?shameful." Members of the commission were also called in front of the microphones and the cameras to explain their actions, however not one of those interviewed admitted to authoring the proposal, or even voting for it. This caused one politician to describe the entire situation as being "surreal."

Domenico Scilipoti, a member of Parliament who stridently opposed the commission's proposal suggested that "The only thing that's left to tax are wives and children."

Things quickly threatened to get out of hand. Within hours a firebomb was thrown on the steps of Italy's tax enforcement agency Equitalia in the port city of Livorno. The press was quick to link this attack to the newly suggested tax on pets and political commentators warned that more such actions might be expected.

The vigor of the public outcry and the threat that the protest might soon turn violent was convincing to the politicians involved. Early that evening there was a new press release announcing that the commission had withdrawn the suggested tax on pets. Now every member of the commission who was interviewed later quite proudly claimed to have voted for the reversal and against the proposed levy.

Apparently the Italians are much more vociferous in their opposition to dog-related taxes than are many other countries. Compare their response to the response of the British, who reacted to a dog tax in a much more covert manner. Once again the issue was a cash poor government seeking more revenue from the population. In the early 1800s the British Parliament created a livestock tax. Farmers were to be taxed for every animal they owned. For the purposes of taxation "animals" were defined as "all beasts born with a tail longer than a man's thumb."

Farmers responded pragmatically to the letter of the law by trying to create a breed of sheep dog in which many puppies would be born with virtually no tail at all. Since genetic modifications are often slow, other methods were resorted to when puppies were not naturally born without a tail. These young pups were then subjected to having their tails docked from the first joint, down to a length never to exceed two inches. Since the tail docking was done at so young an age, the tax collectors couldn't tell whether nature or a surgeon was responsible for the dog's current condition. In the end, the tax was simply waived for this breed! The British, however, could not resist gloating a bit at their success and rubbing it in the face of their political masters. Thus they blatantly gave a new nickname to the Old English Sheep dog and it proudly became the ?English Bobtail.?

Food writer opens cooking school to share secrets

It was with much anticipation and some trepidation that I met Robert Carrier for lunch recently. Food personalities have been invading Toronto in droves, but it is rare that one has the chance to meet a real cooking superstar. Not only is he England's foremost food writer (having been the former food and drink editor of House Beautiful, The Sunday Times of London, the English Harper's Bazaar and Vogue magazines, The Daily Telegraph and Homes & Gardens), he has also written the cookbooks that many of us learned to cook from or to use in furthering our cooking knowledge.

When I met him as he visited Toronto to publicize his latest book, Cooking with Carrier (Gage, $19.95), it was almost an earth-shattering decision to choose the right lunch spot. Finally I gave up trying to second-guess what would please him and decided on Joso's, one of my favorite places. When he arrived, he began joking with the chef and staff in the kitchen and my fears were quelled.

He turned out to be a romantic and charming personality. He once owned a theater in Montmartre and his background in drama showed as he described his food experiences - obviously the love of his life. He owns two restaurants - Carrier's in London (a must if you are traveling there) and Hintlesham Hall in Suffolk, where he also lives a good deal of the year. He has also started a cooking school there to which both amateurs and professionals are flocking. Recently he started a new magazine, Robert Carrier's Kitchen, which is published weekly.

He spoke of the differences he had found between teaching people and writing for them and expressed delight that people who attended his cooking seminars were so enthusiastic. After 30 years in the food profession, although he himself kept growing and learning, he didn't think everyone's interest would still be so keen.

He has found that people to want to learn the recipes that are cooked in restaurants rather than basic techniques and that some students don't even realize that they do not know the basics. The thing that upsets him the most, however, is that people do not invest more in good equipment, especially knives, pots and pans. He dislikes most kitchen machines, with the exception of food processors, which he thoroughly enjoys using. Mr. Carrier likes to keep learning about new cuisines, such as Thai cooking. Every year two apprentices are allowed to come to his restaurants to study, but when a Thai chef came a few years ago the restaurant learned more from him than vice versa. This Thai influence is reflected in items on Mr. Carrier's restaurant menus and his course on French Nouvelle Cuisine also emphasizes the oriental influence in cooking.

Mr. Carrier is also revising his first and possibly most famous cookbook, Great Dishes of the World, originally published 1963 (Thomas Nelson & Sons) in order to keep up with people's changing food expectations. He feels that people are now eating lighter meals, they want things to look as beautiful as they taste, and that quick, pan-fried dishes have become very popular. With these points in mind, he will change the popular cookbook to emphasize garnishing, quick cooking and a lighter style.

One of his most prized possessions is an original copy of this book given to him by a man who had used it over the years in running three successful restaurants. The pages of the book, covered in grease from the restaurants and tattered by much use, testified to the fact that Mr. Carrier was his guru in the matter of cooking.

Here's a recipe from Mr. Carrier's new cookbook that is popular at his own restaurants. PATE aux HERBES 1 pound lean pork Butter 1 large onion, finely chopped 1 pound fresh or 1/4 pound frozen leaf spinach 1/4 pound cooked ham 1/4 pound unsmoked bacon 1/4 pound pork fat 1/4 pound cooked beef tongue 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 tbsps. finely chopped fresh basil (or 1 tbsp. dried) 2 tbsps. finely chopped fresh parsley 2 tbsps. finely chopped chervil (or 1 tbsp. dried) 24 spikes rosemary, finely chopped (or 12 spikes dried) 4 eggs, beaten Salt and freshly ground black pepper Cayenne pepper Freshly grated nutmeg 6 ounces chicken livers 2/3 cup heavy cream (whipping) 2 tbsps. unflavored gelatine (2 envelopes) Thin strips of pounded pork fat Gherkins Cut the pork into small cubes, place in blender or food processor and blend until minced. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large frying pan, add chopped onion and saute, stirring constantly, until it is transparent. Add spinach and continue to cook, stirring, until the spinach has wilted (if fresh). Remove onions and spinach and chop coarsely. Add onion and spinach mixture to pork and blend again. Transfer to a large mixing bowl.

Dice ham, bacon, pork fat and beef tongue and add to green pate mixture. Then add finely chopped garlic and fresh herbs.

Stir in the beaten eggs and add the salt and freshly ground pepper, cayenne and nutmeg to taste.

Dice chicken livers and saute in 2 tablespoons butter until golden.

Stir in cream and gelatine (which you have dissolved in a little water) and mix well. The raw pate with now be a nice, loose, spoon able mixture ready for cooking.

Line the bottom and sides of an ovenproof terrine with thin stips of pounded pork fat. (Note: you can ask the butcher to do this for you. But I warn you, don't ask him on a busy Saturday morning when the shop is crowded.) Spoon pate mixture into terrine and cover with thin strips of pork fat. Cook in a preheated 325 degrees F. slow oven for 1/2 hour and then lower the heat to 300 degrees F. and cook another 30 to 40 minutes.

Remove from oven to cool, pressing excess juices out of the terrine with a board or back of a spoon. Serve cold, cut into slices, with gherkins.

Note: To remove pate from the terrine, place terrine in a pan of hot water for a minute or two then insert a sharp pointed knife all around pate loosening it from the sides of the terrine. Turn terrine upside down over serving plate and pate will slide easily. Serves 10 to 12.

It?s about where your people are and what they want. ?It?s about the ones who pay to get it. It?s about effective marketing.

  • Digital Coupons: ?online subscribers can download and use in the store.

This can be exciting but that depends on how you use it.

Change Is Good, If It?s Smart And Efficient

Upgrading the way your clients interact with your business has a lot to do with what THEY?want.? You don?t have to wait for complaints to make wise adjustments. But you do have to watch how they shop and how they respond to you and other companies and services like yours. You can get that information by observing and by asking.

Every update to your business and your marketing should serve a specific purpose; because effective change is not about copycat or bandwagon behavior. It?s about what actually works.

Whether Website or Social Media?

You need to understand the reason for developing and using it, and you need to understand the goals. Any marketing expert that you hire should be able to explain it in a way that you get. You may not understand the details but you should get the big picture, before you dive in.

Are your people on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn? If they are, then what are they talking about on those networks and can you organically join the conversation? ?Are your clients avid mobile users? If so, you may need to pay attention to their mobile shopping habits and make some tweaks to your web and mobile presence. ?Is your audience text happy? If so, start looking for a way to join that conversation. Start crafting a message and making an offer that your people would be happy to receive.

You have marketing options, but it begins with you understanding who your people are, what they want and where they go (online and offline). It begins with you, then your team.

Iran, other Mideast states hit by computer virus

LONDON (AP) ? Iran and other Middle East countries have been hit with a cunning computer virus that can eavesdrop on computer users and their co-workers and filch information from nearby cellphones, cybersecurity experts said Tuesday. And suspicion immediately fell on Israel as the culprit.

The Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the "Flame" virus is unprecedented in size and complexity, with researcher Roel Schouwenberg marveling at its versatility.

"It can be used to spy on everything that a user is doing," he said.

Computers in Iran appear to have been particularly affected, and Kaspersky's conclusion that the virus was crafted at the behest of a national government fueled speculation it could be part of an Israeli-backed campaign of electronic sabotage against the Jewish state's archenemy.

The virus can activate a computer's audio systems to listen in on Skype calls or office chatter. It can also take screenshots, log keystrokes and ? in one of its more novel functions? steal data from Bluetooth-enabled cellphones.

Schouwenberg said there is evidence to suggest that the people behind Flame also helped craft Stuxnet, a virus that is believed to have attacked nuclear centrifuges in Iran in 2010. Many suspect Stuxnet was the work of Israeli intelligence.

Tehran has not said whether it lost any data to Flame, but a unit of the Iranian communications and information technology ministry said it has produced an anti-virus capable of identifying and removing Flame from its computers.

Israel's vice premier did little to deflect suspicion about the country's possible involvement in the attack.

"Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio when asked about Flame. "Israel is blessed with high technology, and we boast tools that open all sorts of opportunities for us."

Researchers not involved in Flame's discovery were more skeptical of its sophistication than Kaspersky, with Richard Bejtlich of Virginia-based Mandiant saying the virus appeared similar to spyware used by the German government to monitor criminal suspects.

"There have been tool like this employed by high-end teams for many years," he said.

Colorado-based Webroot said the virus wasn't as complex or as stealthy as Stuxnet and was "a relatively easy threat to identify."

Flame is unusually large. Malicious programs collected by the British security firm Sophos averaged about 340 kilobytes in 2010, the same year that Kaspersky believes Flame first started spreading. Flame is 20 megabytes ? nearly 60 times that figure.

Alan Woodward, a professor of computing at the University of Surrey in England, said functions can be added or subtracted to the virus depending on what kind of espionage is desired, not unlike the way apps can be downloaded to a smartphone.

He was particularly struck by Flame's ability to turn an infected computer into a kind of "industrial vacuum cleaner," copying data from vulnerable cellphones or other Bluetooth wireless devices left near it.

"I don't believe I've seen it before," he said.

Udi Mokady, chief executive of Cyber-Ark, an Israeli developer of information security, said he believes four countries, in no particular order, have the know-how to develop so sophisticated a weapon: Israel, the U.S., China and Russia.

"It was 20 times more sophisticated than Stuxnet," with thousands of lines of code that took a large team, ample funding and months, if not years, to develop, he said. "It's a live program that communicates back to its master. It asks, 'Where should I go? What should I do now?' It's really almost like a science fiction movie."

It's not clear exactly what the virus was targeting. Kaspersky said it detected the program in hundreds of computers, mainly in Iran but also in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

The company would not give details on the victims except to say that they "range from individuals to certain state-related organizations or educational institutions."

Schouwenberg said stolen data was being sent to some 80 different servers, something that would give the virus' controllers time to adjust their tactics if they were discovered.

As for Flame's purpose, "maybe it's just espionage," he said. "Maybe it's also sabotage."
