Self-charging power cell converts and stores energy

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? Researchers have developed a self-charging power cell that directly converts mechanical energy to chemical energy, storing the power until it is released as electrical current. By eliminating the need to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy for charging a battery, the new hybrid generator-storage cell utilizes mechanical energy more efficiently than systems using separate generators and batteries.

At the heart of the self-charging power cell is a piezoelectric membrane that drives lithium ions from one side of the cell to the other when the membrane is deformed by mechanical stress. The lithium ions driven through the polarized membrane by the piezoelectric potential are directly stored as chemical energy using an electrochemical process.

By harnessing a compressive force, such as a shoe heel hitting the pavement from a person walking, the power cell generates enough current to power a small calculator. A hybrid power cell the size of a conventional coin battery can power small electronic devices -- and could have military applications for soldiers who might one day recharge battery-powered equipment as they walked.

"People are accustomed to considering electrical generation and storage as two separate operations done in two separate units," said Zhong Lin Wang, a Regents professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. "We have put them together in a single hybrid unit to create a self-charging power cell, demonstrating a new technique for charge conversion and storage in one integrated unit."

The research was reported Aug. 9, 2012 in the journal Nano Letters. The research was supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and the Knowledge Innovation Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The power cell consists of a cathode made from lithium-cobalt oxide (LiCoO₂) and an anode consisting of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanotubes grown atop a titanium film. The two electrodes are separated by a membrane made from poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) film, which generates a piezoelectric charge when placed under strain. When the power cell is mechanically compressed, the PVDF film generates a piezoelectric potential that serves as a charge pump to drive the lithium ions from the cathode side to the anode side. The energy is then stored in the anode as lithium-titanium oxide.

Charging occurs in cycles with the compression of the power cell creating a piezopotential that drives the migration of lithium ions until a point at which the chemical equilibrium of the two electrodes are re-established and the distribution of lithium ions can balance the piezoelectric fields in the PVDF film. When the force applied to the power cell is released, the piezoelectric field in the PVDF disappears, and the lithium ions are kept at the anode through a chemical process.

The charging cycle is completed through an electrochemical process that oxidizes a small amount of lithium-cobalt oxide at the cathode to Li_1-xCoO₂ and reduces a small amount of titanium dioxide to Li_xTiO₂ at the anode. Compressing the power cell again repeats the cycle.

When an electrical load is connected between the anode and cathode, electrons flow to the load, and the lithium ions within the cell flow back from the anode side to the cathode side.

Using a mechanical compressive force with a frequency of 2.3 Hertz, the researchers increased the voltage in the power cell from 327 to 395 millivolts in just four minutes. The device was then discharged back to its original voltage with a current of one milliamp for about two minutes. The researchers estimated the stored electric capacity of the power cell to be approximately 0.036 milliamp-hours.

So far, Wang and his research team -- which included Xinyu Xue, Sihong Wang, Wenxi Guo and Yan Zhang -- have built and tested more than 500 of the power cells. Wang estimates that the generator-storage cell will be as much as five times more efficient at converting mechanical energy to chemical energy for as a two-cell generator-storage system.

Much of the mechanical energy applied to the cells is now consumed in deforming the stainless steel case the researchers are using to house their power cell. Wang believes the power storage could be boosted by using an improved case.

"When we improve the packaging materials, we anticipate improving the overall efficiency," he said. "The amount of energy actually going into the cell is relatively small at this stage because so much of it is consumed by the shell."

Beyond the efficiencies that come from directly converting mechanical energy to chemical energy, the power cell could also reduce weight and space required by separate generators and batteries. The mechanical energy could come from walking, the tires of a vehicle hitting the pavement, or by harnessing ocean waves or mechanical vibrations.

"One day we could have a power package ready to use that takes advantage of this hybrid approach," Wang said. "Almost anything that involves mechanical action could provide the strain needed for charging. People walking could be generating electricity as they move."

I?m interested in doing something with interior design or architecture. I don?t know what kind of degrees I would have to get though or what type of school to attend, or really I just don?t have much info on it. can you answer any of these and what school in southern cali would you recommend?

Interior design is simpler: you can do it as a bachelors [or higher], it?s often offered as an Associate [2 year] degree. If you have some talent and a 2 year degree, you may be able to find a firm to bring you in on the ground floor, but frankly, I think it?s a field that is going to continue to suffer badly in the economic downturn.

Architecture is way more involved, since you have to engineer buildings capable of withstanding earthquakes and hurricanes: people?s lives depend on you. It generally takes a bachelors in fine art or engineering, plus another 2 to 3 years.

NEW YORK (AP) ? An associate of San Francisco Giants All-Star Melky Cabrera purchased a website and attempted to create evidence to support a claim that the outfielder inadvertently took the substance that caused a positive drug test, Major League Baseball said.

Baseball officials uncovered the scheme as Cabrera prepared his case to challenge the test. Cabrera's grievance then was dropped, and MLB announced a 50-game suspension Wednesday.

The New York Daily News first reported on the scheme Sunday.

A team of six-to-seven investigators from MLB spent several weeks working to uncover the plan, a baseball official familiar with the probe told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because MLB didn't authorize anyone to discuss the matter publicly.

It's the first such case MLB has had and officials hope that uncovering the scheme will discourage similar attempts.

The person said baseball had referred the case to federal investigators.

A second baseball official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said additional discipline against Cabrera was unlikely.

Cabrera, MVP of the All-Star game last month, tested positive for testosterone, MLB said.

The person said Juan Nunez, who works with Cabrera's agents, purchased an existing website and attempted to alter it in a manner that would allow Cabrera to claim the positive test was caused by a substance obtained through the website. The News reported Nunez paid $10,000 for the website.

"If you create a new website, you would know when the website was created," the baseball official said. "At least they were smart enough to buy an existing website."

The baseball official said MLB investigators were able to use their forensic resources to trace the website back to Nunez.

Cabrera is represented by brothers Sam and Seth Levinson of ACES, a sports management company based in Brooklyn. The Levinsons, who did not respond to messages Sunday, told the Daily News that Nunez was a "paid consultant" of their agency.

"The MLBPA has clearly stated that ACES has no connection to the website or this matter and, as reported, Juan Nunez has taken full responsibility for his acts," Seth Levinson told The Associated Press. "There is nothing more we can add and we will allow our reputation in the industry for 27 years to speak for itself."

The second baseball official said MLB intends to ask the Major League Baseball Players Association, which regulates agents, to follow up on the situation at ACES.

Cabrera was enjoying the best season of his big league career, helping the Giants contend for a postseason berth. He was hitting .346 with 11 homers and 60 RBIs, but will miss the rest of the regular season and the start of the playoffs, if the Giants advance that far.

A former member of the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves and Kansas City Royals, Cabrera is eligible for free agency after the World Series.

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy declined to discuss the allegations against Cabrera before the Giants played the Padres in San Diego. He didn't defend his player's actions, either.

"You can be world-class parents and your kids can go south or have some issues. We can't follow guys 24/7, and it comes down to choices. (Cabrera) is a grown man, he's a veteran," Bochy said. "These are unfortunate things and we'll continue to work at cleaning out baseball."

UK recession may not be as deep as feared, if indeed we are in recession at all. Martin Weale a member of the MPC suggested this week, Britain is not in recession, it is just not growing. It is more like a sustained period of stagnation. The squeeze on household incomes through rising fuel and petrol prices continues but may be coming to an end soon. Yes economic news this week, inflation CPI basis increased by 2.6% in July compared to 2.4% in June. RPI and RPIX inflation increased to 3.2%. Earnings were up by just 1.6% suggesting the squeeze on real incomes persists as prices are still rising.

Oil price Brent Crude closed at $113 per barrel up from a low of ?90 in June, this is the air conditioning season after all, prospects for oil and commodity prices suggest little respite to energy costs and the income squeeze this year.

In other news, unemployment fell as the claimant rate fell by just under 6,000 in July to 1.59 million. The wider LFS survey confirmed a fall of 46,000 in the three months to June to a level of 2.564 million and a rate of 8%.

Retail sales volumes increased by 2.8% in July and retail sales values increased by 3.1%. The June volumes were also revised up to 2.6%, so over the last three months retail sales have averaged 2.5%. Still below the long run average of 3.4% but this is not recession territory.

News from the SMMT, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders confirmed car manufacturing output surged by 22% in July and 15% year to date. Car output is likely to hit 1.45 million units this year, still some 10% below the output achieved in 2008 and well below the two million forecast unit sales this year but good news nevertheless.

So what to make of it all? Rising inflation, falling unemployment, retail sales up and car manufacturing up, this is not consistent with an economy in recession or flat lining for that matter.

Our model based on output and employment, suggests the economy grew by around 1% in the second quarter and will grow by around 1.2% for the year as a whole. In the minutes of the MPC meeting for the month, the nine members voted unanimously to maintain base rates at 0.5% and to maintain the level of QE at ?375 billion. ?For some members the decision was nevertheless more finely balanced, since a good case could be
made at this meeting for more asset purchases.?

The markets have assumed that more QE will follow but a further fall in base rates to 0.25% appears to be unlikely. Ten year gilt yields increased to 1.67% by the end of the week rallying by just over ten basis points, which suggests the likelihood of more QE is falling despite the ambivalent statement from the Monetary Committee.

The MPC is placing great faith in the Finance for Lending Scheme. The FLS has the potential to improve funding conditions for banks materially and to encourage lending, thus providing some support to both demand and supply, the minutes revealed. (Based on the assumption that households and businesses are prepared to borrow of course). Let us hope, the MPC have found a new toy to replace QE. It looks relatively harmless.

In other news, investors welcomed the statement by Angela Merkel as the Chancellor explained the pledge by the European Central Bank to do whatever it takes to support the euro project was ?completely in line? with the views of the Euro leaders. Markets rallied and the Euro responded. It was another kick of the can down the long road for the embattled currency.

Egypt's Morsi to attend summit in Iran: state media

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi plans to attend a summit in Iran this month, state media reported on Saturday, on the first such visit since Cairo severed ties with Tehran more than three decades ago.

The official MENA news agency quoted a source in the presidency as saying Morsi will attend the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Tehran on August 30-31 at which Egypt will transfer the bloc's rotating leadership to Iran.

Cairo and Tehran severed diplomatic relations after the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran, and Egypt has accused Tehran of backing militants on its turf.

Morsi, the country's first Islamist president, has been expected to improve ties with Tehran since his inauguration on June 30. It is unclear whether Morsi will hold two-way meetings with Iranian officials during the visit.

Under ousted president Hosni Mubarak, several attempts were by trade ministers and business leaders to bolster economic ties. But they stirred objections from the foreign ministry and intelligence circles, officials said at the time.

On Thursday, the United States said it had told Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that the NAM summit in Iran sent a "strange signal" after Tehran reported that the UN chief would also attend.

Steve Jobs' stolen iPad unwittingly used by local clown after burglary

What would you do if you had Steve Jobs' iPad? Kenny the Clown, who had the late Apple (AAPL) co-founder's tablet all to himself for a few days this month, didn't play any games, surf the net or check for any top-secret corporate documents.

Instead, he loaded iTunes to play the "Pink Panther" theme song and Michael Jackson, using the magical device to entertain Bay Area kids and tourists during his clown routine.

He had no idea the device came from the fabled Jobs residence until after the friend who gave him the gadget was charged with breaking into the CEO's Palo Alto home. By then, the cops had already shown up at his door and taken it away.

"It would be like getting a football from Joe Montana that was stolen out of his house," said the 47-year-old professional clown, whose real name is Kenneth Kahn. "It's bizarre; it's really bizarre."

Police said Kariem McFarlin, a 35-year-old Alameda resident, gave Kahn a silver 64GB iPad that was stolen out of the Waverley Street home on July 17. McFarlin also allegedly gave another iPad to his daughter, and both devices were returned to the Jobs family after McFarlin was arrested on Aug. 2, police said.

McFarlin is accused of stealing iPods, Macs, Tiffany & Co. Jewelry,

and even Jobs' wallet and driver's license by using a spare key he found on the property to break into the home, which was under construction. The heist has sparked international media attention since being revealed by this newspaper late Monday.

Kahn had played around with plenty of iPads at Apple stores and thought he had just gotten an old device McFarlin wanted to get rid of, assuming his friend had purchased a newer-version iPad.

"I didn't notice anything special or anything like that," said Kahn, adding he had the iPad for three or four days before police asked for it back. "It was silver; it looked normal. I was basically using it like an iPod."

Kahn -- who unsuccessfully ran for mayor of his hometown Alameda in 2006 and 2010 and for San Francisco mayor in 2007 -- met McFarlin when he coached him on the Encinal High School basketball team in Alameda more than 10 years ago, and they remained close.

He said McFarlin is not "any type of menace" and before the story hit the news, his friends figured it was a case of mistaken identity.

"He's a nice guy who made a horrible, horrible decision," Kahn said. "I wish I could ask him: 'What were you thinking?'"

McFarlin is due in court Monday where he will be represented by a recently hired private attorney. The public defender's office, which is still officially representing McFarlin, declined to comment and said McFarlin's new attorney wants to remain anonymous until Monday's hearing.

Court records show McFarlin pleaded guilty in Santa Clara County Superior Court in 1999 to driving without a license, a misdemeanor that netted him fines and a year of probation. The former San Jose State football player was also arrested by Pleasant Hill police last year on suspicion of stealing but prosecutors never filed charges.

"Before the public sees him as this horrible monster, I'd like to hopefully think we can somehow get across that he just made the worst mistake of his life," Kahn said.

McFarlin, who police say confessed to the crime, remained in jail Thursday in lieu of $500,000 bail. Apple and the Jobs family have declined to comment.

"It still hasn't really 100 percent set in for me. It was Steve Jobs' iPad -- literally," Kahn said. "If this thing weren't so tragic, it would be comical."

Real estate investors, hungry for break-even or positive cash flow rental properties, purchased income property out of state the mid 2000?s. California investors bought houses in Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma. Florida investors purchased houses in Louisiana. Texas investors purchased in Las Vegas. Some these investors made millions of dollars because of the appreciation in those hot markets.

On the other hand, many beginning investors lost their hard-earned investment capital or only made a meager profit because they failed to do their homework on the out of state area?s real estate market and customs. If you?re thinking about buying investment properties in a different state than you?re accustomed to, beware of these five surprises.

Pitfalls of Investing in ?Emerging Markets Out of State

Surprise #1 - ?This house will only rent for $750 per month, not $1200!?
This was one of the top mistakes made by investors. Large real estate investing groups, selling out of state properties to local investors, inflated the rental income. Because so many houses were purchased in a limited area by investors, a rental glut lowered expected income. This created hardships for investors who suddenly had to pay out hundreds of dollars a month instead of reaping promised profits.

Surprise #2 ? ?You can?t sell this house, now!?
Some investors who couldn?t rent the out of state property decided to sell because the values did rise significantly while the house was built or during the purchase time. However, many investors were stunned when they were told they couldn?t sell the property within the first year after purchase. Restrictions prohibiting real estate investors from quick-turning their properties is a trend that is growing increasingly popular with some developers.

Surprise #3 ? ?You Can?t Lease This Property!?
New home developers and many Homeowners? Associations (HOA)s prohibit property owners from leasing their properties. Some of these restrictions got passed, without the investor being notified, during the property purchase phase. You must read the fine print to see if any clauses prevent the rental of the property. Home builders, to keep the value of the neighborhood up, added restrictions requiring the purchaser to occupy the home as a primary or secondary residence.

Surprise #4 ? ?These (extra) costs are the norm in this state!?
Besides extra closing costs like pricey surveys, common in Florida but rare in California, other surprise costs included higher transfer fees and taxes. Property taxes in Florida cost much more for investors in Florida than in California. On the other side of the country, out of state investors were shocked by California?s state tax held in escrow: 3.8% of the property?s SALE?S price, no matter the actual profit made. In other words, an investor who made a quick profit of $20,000 on a fast flip could have more than the profit held until the next year?s income tax filing.

Surprise #5 ? ?Houses don?t appreciate 30% per year here!?
Perhaps you?ve attended or been invited to a high-power investment seminar that promotes out of state real estate investing. Some of these ?investor clubs? really are promoters who receive kick-backs in real estate commissions, property management fees, mortgage loan fees, and even fire insurance premiums. They tell stories of huge appreciation gains, which are probably true. However, not all areas enjoy significant appreciation-year after year.

Emerging Markets Investing Due Diligence
Don?t make the costly mistake of not fully researching the complete market customs and restrictions in the area where you?re thinking about investing. If you can?t afford to go to check out the area in person, choose another area that you can visit.

Bill Gates backs 'future' toilet

Bill Gates is, in a manner of speaking, flushing his money down the toilet.

His charitable organisation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is looking for future loos that can improve sanitation around the world.

At the Reinvent the Toilet fair, hosted at its Seattle campus this week, designs included a lavatory that used microwave energy to turn poo into electricity.

Another turned excrement into charcoal, while a third used urine for flushing.

In total 28 designs were shown off at the fair and the winner was a team from the California Institute of Technology.

Led by Prof Michael Hoffman, the toilet they designed was solar-powered and generated hydrogen gas and electricity. They won a $100,000 prize.

"We couldn't be happier with the response that we've gotten," Bill Gates said at the event.

Preventable deaths

The project challenged inventors to come up with a toilet that operated without running water, electricity or a septic system. It needed to operate at a cost of no more than five cents (3p) a day and would ideally capture energy or other resources.

Walter Gibson, from a team of scientists at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, showed off a toilet that used black soldier fly larvae to process waste and create environmentally-friendly animal feed.

The toilet is already being field tested in South Africa.

Traditional flush toilets waste tons of drinking water and are often impractical in many areas of the developing world.

The UN estimates that disease caused by unsafe sanitation is responsible for half of the hospitalisations in the developing world. About 1.5 million children die each year from diarrhoeal disease.

The Gates Foundation has committed $370m (?235m) to its future toilet initiative and hopes to field test the prototypes within three years.
