Minnesota Bankruptcy Attorney Gregory J. Wald: Speak With A ...

Filing for Chapter 13 gives people with a source of income the choice of devising a plan to repay some of their debt when they're experiencing a financial hardship. This is why Chapter 13 is also known as the "wage earner's plan."

In the instance that you've already filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, yet you are still experiencing a financial hardship, there are options.?If you find yourself in this predicament do not simply stop making payments to your trustee. Once you do that you can expect your bankruptcy case to be dismissed without discharge.

Don't ignore your problem. Speak with your bankruptcy attorney about a Hardship Discharge. This type of discharge will clear debts and give you a fresh start, even though your repayment plan has not been completed.

This option is available to you if:

  • The failure to complete your repayment plan was due to circumstances beyond your control.?
  • Your creditors received at least what they would have gotten out of a Chapter 7 liquidation case.?
  • Modification of your plan isn't possible. For example, you sustained an injury or illness that prevents adequate employment that would finance a modified plan.?
Hardship Discharges do not apply to any debts that are non-dischargeable, so it's much more limiting than a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. There are many facets to a Hardship Discharge which is why it is important to speak to your bankruptcy attorney.

Do not feel trapped by your finances. You do have options for dealing with your debt. Contact Minnesota bankruptcy attorney Gregory Wald at 952-921-5802. He will go over your Chapter 13 case and give you all the best options specific to your situation.

John Shinal's Tech Investor: How big will the Apple freak-out be?

By John Shinal

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) ? I?m guessing the executive team and other top managers at Apple are freaking out a little bit right now, after a preliminary court victory by hedge-fund manager and dissident shareholder David Einhorn late Friday.

David Einhorn, president of Greenlight Capital, speaks in October 2010 at the New York Value Investing Congress.

If the air of invincibility at Apple /quotes/zigman/68270/quotes/nls/aapl AAPL +1.06% ?wasn?t pierced with the death of Steve Jobs, it should be clear to the executive management team now that it needs to take greater account of shareholders than Jobs ever did.

Granted ? and just to be clear ? this is a preliminary victory for Einhorn, who?s won the right to have the issue voted on separately from other shareholder proposals at Apple?s annual meeting in Cupertino, Calif., next week.

/conga/story/2013/02/oscars.html 250972

And the fact that he lost on his second motion for an injunction against Apple took some luster off this first-round win in the legal battle. I?m also not a big fan of Einhorn?s motivation, which looks to be greed. But the financing of public tech companies is a capitalist undertaking, and he clearly knows the rules.

Einhorn is trying to prevent Apple from democratizing the process of handing out preferred shares, which dilute the ownership stakes of common shareholders. Presumably, Einhorn is guessing that if you let common shareholders have a say in the matter, they?ll vote to spread the wealth around. In other words, they will choose to have Apple dole out cash with dividends paid to all owners of Apple stock, over a proposal that rewards a smaller number of preferred shareholders.

Fighting as hard as Einhorn is to stop Apple from handing out its cash the way CEO Tim Cook and the board want to is a dangerous move for anyone who would also wish for Apple?s long-term success.

Presumably, Einhorn is guessing that if you let common shareholders have a say in the matter, they?ll vote to spread the wealth around.

Einhorn was denied his bolder legal desire, which was to have an even greater say in how Apple hands out dividends.

Cook?s tenure has grown rocky over the past year, as the features of the iPhone 5 underwhelmed a bit ? while the new video technology was a breakthrough for the company, that was about it ? and because Apple?s stock has gotten chopped down to $450 from $700 last summer. Related column by Howard Gold: Four reasons Apple won?t see the $700 mark again.

The company recorded meager profit growth in the fourth quarter, fueling the late-January selloff that triggered Einhorn?s action. See full report on Apple?s first-fiscal-quarter earnings and Mark Hulbert column: Apple?s drop shows price of popularity.

/quotes/zigman/68270/quotes/nls/aapl AAPL 450.81, +4.75, +1.06%

Off peak

Apple shares over past year.

Cook and his team don?t need any further distractions, and now they must make an argument to shareholders in favor of the democratization plan he and the board put together.

Einhorn?s becoming worked up about how Apple takes care of income investors ? i.e., those in it for dividends rather than growth ? suggests that he doesn?t see much in the way of capital gains coming from his current stake in the company.

The slowdown in Apple?s growth rate late last year is one piece of evidence ? maybe not a conclusive piece but neither an immaterial one ? that the company has reached a different phase in its life cycle.

If true, Apple would have become more like its fellow tech titans, including Microsoft /quotes/zigman/20493/quotes/nls/msft MSFT +0.98% ?and Cisco Systems /quotes/zigman/20039/quotes/nls/csco CSCO +0.67% , each of which also grew into a market cap that made it the world?s most valuable company ? for a time.

Israel licenses US oil drilling in Golan Heights

Israel has granted a United States energy company a licence to drill for oil and gas in the occupied Golan Heights, in a move that may stir up tension with neighbouring Syria.

The permit allows Genie Oil and Gas exclusive petroleum exploration rights over a 153-square mile radius in the southern part of the Golan Heights.

In a statement the company said: ?Based on preliminary analysis and interpretation of existing geological data, the newly issued licence area may contain significant quantities of conventional oil and gas in relatively tight formations.?

Ahead of President Obama?s planned visit to Israel next month, the decision has the potential to provoke international outcry.

Reports suggested that the timing of the licence is linked to the civil war in Syria, as the conflict - stricken country is occupied with internal matters.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six Day War in 1967 and annexed the territory in 1981, though the occupation is not recognised under international law.

There are estimated to be around 30 Israeli settlements and 20,000 settlers in the Golan Heights area.

Google's #ifihadglass contest to give Glass to US users | Firstpost

San Francisco: Google is giving more people a chance to pay $1,500 for a pair of the Internet-connected glasses that the company is touting as the next breakthrough in mobile computing.

The product, dubbed ?Google Glass,? will be offered to ?bold, creative individuals? selected as part of a contest announced Wednesday. Participants must live in the US and submit an application of up to 50 words explaining what they would do with the Google Glass technology. Entries must include the hash tag ?ifihadglass? and be submitted through Google Plus or Twitter by next Wednesday. Google did not say how many glasses it will sell this way.

Winners will receive the ?Explorer? version of Google Glass, a forerunner of the product that is expected to be released to the mass market next year. Google Inc. already sold an unspecified number of the glasses to computer programmers who also paid $1,500 apiece at a company conference last June.

The people picked to buy this next batch of glasses will be notified in mid- to late March. They will have to travel to New York, Los Angeles or the San Francisco Bay area to pick them up.

AP

Google co-founder Sergey Brin, left, wears Google Glass glasses at an announcement for the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences at Genentech Hall on UCSF?s Mission Bay campus in San Francisco. AP

Google Glass is supposed to perform many of the same tasks as smartphones, except the spectacles respond to voice commands instead of fingers touching a display screen. The glasses include a tiny display screen attached to a rim above the right eye and run on Google?s Android operating system for mobile devices.

Because no hands are required to operate them, Google Glass is supposed to make it easier for people to take pictures or record video wherever they might be or whatever they might be doing. Online searches also can be more easily conducted by just telling Google Glass to look up a specific piece of information. Google?s Android system already has a voice search function on smartphones and tablet computers.

In the latest demonstration of the product?s potential, Google posted a video showing people wearing the glasses while skydiving, riding a rollercoaster, skiing, riding a horse and even swinging on a trapeze. The company, which is based in Mountain View, California, also posted photos of the glasses in five different colors: charcoal, tangerine, shale, cotton and sky blue.

To gauge how people might use its glasses, Google is encouraging entrants in its contest to include up to five photos and 15 seconds of video with their applications. The company doesn?t want to see any nudity or violence. ?Basically, don?t add anything you wouldn?t be OK with your Mom seeing,? Google advised.

Google Glass is at the forefront of a new wave of technology known as ?wearable computing.?

When he demonstrated the glasses at last June?s company conference, Google co-founder Sergey Brin acknowledged the company was still working out bugs and trying to figure out how to extend the product?s battery life. Brin has been overseeing the work on Google Glass, which the company first began developing in 2010 as part of a secretive company division now known as Google X.

Now that Google Glass is no longer a secret, Brin is often seen wearing the product in public. He sported a pair of the glasses during a Wednesday appearance at an event announcing the creation of a $3 million annual prize for outstanding achievements in medicine and biology. Brin, who owns Google stock currently worth nearly $20 billion, is helping to fund the annual awards.

Brin has said the mass-market version of Google Glass will cost less than $1,500, but more than a smartphone.

AllThingsD: No native BlackBerry 10 Instagram app in sight

The mobile OS that needs more big name apps to tether their wagons to insure a boost in user adoption is less one key photography app. According to AllThingsD, there is no native Instagram app in development for BB10 handsets -- at least for the foreseeable future. Quoting sources close to the popular social / photo filtering app, the report goes on to say that future development is also uncertain. Of course, the outfit is working on an Android port that will be usable on BlackBerry's latest, but with significant compromises to user experience to come as the cost of admission. The new operating system did secure native support from Facebook, Foursquare, LinkedIn and Twitter at launch.

SI: Washington Redskins 2013 Offseason Preview

What We'll Be Saying In July
A new era has begun for the Redskins, and anything less than making the playoffs will be viewed as an unacceptable failure -- even if backup Kirk Cousins is the quarterback when the season begins. From the moment training camp opens, every step Robert Griffin III takes will be scrutinized with eagle eyes. This team is now expected to win after years of futility, but no one knows if the franchise quarterback will ever be the same player again. His health will be breathlessly debated until he proves himself on Sundays.

IN FOCUS: A400M to meet requirements ?from day one?: Airbus Military

France's first A400M Atlas transport will be capable of meeting the design's maximum payload requirement on its delivery, but is to have its turboprop engines replaced after just two years of service, Airbus Military confirms.

The first of 174 A400Ms on order for eight nations, aircraft MSN7 is scheduled to be delivered to the French air force's Orleans air base in late May or early June, and to then participate in the Paris air show.

Speaking at the manufacturer's San Pablo final assembly site in Seville, Spain on 15 February, Airbus Military programme head C?dric Gautier identified the period between 2 and 6 March as the target for the French air force aircraft's flight debut. Its first auxiliary power unit test was conducted on 14 February, with ground engine runs due to commence soon.

"For the time being it is running extremely well," says Gautier, who adds that negotiations over the aircraft's entry into service configuration are also on track to be concluded with Paris by late March. "We have no technical or operational show-stoppers expressed by the customer," he notes.

Domenici acknowledges having son outside marriage

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? Former Sen. Pete Domenici has disclosed that he fathered a secret child in the 1970s with the 24-year-old daughter of one of his Senate colleagues ? a startling revelation for a politician with a reputation as an upstanding family man.

Domenici and Michelle Laxalt sent statements to the Albuquerque Journal that announced the relationship for the first time and identified their son as Nevada attorney Adam Paul Laxalt. They said they decided to go public with their decades-old secret because they believed someone was about to release the information in an attempt to smear Domenici.

"I deeply regret this and am very sorry for my behavior," Domenici, 80, said in his statement. "I hope New Mexicans will view that my accomplishments for my beloved state outweigh my personal transgression."

The Journal reported on the relationship in an article published Wednesday.

Domenici was the longest-serving senator in New Mexico history when he retired in 2008 after six terms. He was known for his unflagging support of the state's national laboratories and military installations, and he became a power broker for his work on the federal budget and energy policy.

Domenici voted for the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton in 1998 after his affair with Monica Lewinsky, but his floor statement focused on the fact that Clinton had lied under oath, noting that the trial "has never been about the President's private sex acts, as tawdry as they have been."

But in the same speech, he cited the value of "truthfulness" and how it's the first pillar of good character.

Reached at his home in Washington on Wednesday, Domenici said he had nothing more to say. Domenici and his wife have been married more than 50 years and have eight children.

The scandal has all the elements of an inside-the-Beltway soap opera.

Michelle Laxalt is the daughter of former U.S. Sen. Paul Laxalt, himself a significant political figure in the 1970s and '80s as he served as Nevada governor and two terms in the Senate alongside Domenici.

Michelle Laxalt became a prominent lobbyist, Republican activist and television commentator after the affair. She said in the statement that she chose to raise her son as a single parent and that the two agreed that it would be a private matter.

"One night's mistake led to pregnancy more than 30 years ago," she said.

Laxalt's prominence in national politics occasionally put her in an odd position of publicly discussing the integrity of the man who is the father of her child.

In 2008, Domenici was reprimanded by the Senate ethics committee for his involvement in a scandal over the Bush administration's firing of eight U.S. attorneys.

At the time, Laxalt defended Domenici's integrity on CNN, calling him an honorable man who was supporting "no fewer than eight children."

The website for Adam Laxalt's law firm said he is a former U.S. Navy officer and lawyer who served in Iraq. He also worked for then-Sen. John Warner, R-Va., and as a special assistant to an undersecretary of state, according to the website.

He has also written a number of conservative columns against policies like Obamacare and the lifting of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy for gays for publications like the National Review Online, American Spectator and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. And he serves on the board of Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada.

Domenici is the latest in a long line of politicians who were forced to reveal secret children, from one-time Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards to former Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Just last week, U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee acknowledged that he's the father of a 24-year-old woman after the two were seen communicating on Twitter during the State of the Union address.

Earlier this month, the daughter of the late U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond and his family's maid died in South Carolina. Essie Mae Washington-Williams, whose mother was black, didn't come forward and identify Thurmond as her father until after his death at age 100 in 2003.

Thurmond, who was white, was an ardent segregationist for decades.

Domenici said he was sorry that he caused hurt and disappointment for his wife and other family members. He said he disclosed the situation to his family several months ago.

"I have apologized as best as I can to my wife, and we have worked together to strengthen our relationship," Domenici said.

Domenici told the Journal his son participated in the drafting of his statement, but it was unclear if the two had a prior relationship.

The Laxalts did not immediately respond to emails and phone calls seeking comment.

In New Mexico, political leaders said they were surprised, but they doubted the revelation would negatively impact the Domenici legacy.

"It is going to make his legacy a little bit more colorful because he is not exactly the kind of guy you expect that from," said Maurilio Vigil, a political science professor emeritus at Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M.

"It is surprising because he was always an upstanding type of fellow, a family man, and that was his image."

Edward Lujan, former chairman of the Republican Party of New Mexico, said he had heard rumors about the child years ago, but "I didn't pay much attention. I didn't care. Those kinds of things honestly are between the families and has nothing to do with how he did his job."

"I don't think there was anything hypocritical about anything," Lujan said. "I admire him as much today as I did yesterday and the day before."

Republican Gov. Susana Martinez said her "thoughts and prayers are with the family.

"It's a difficult time," she said, "but Sen. Domenici's work is a very separate and distinct issue. I think he's done great things for the state and I don't think anyone will ever forget the hard work and all that he brought to New Mexico."

Others weren't as strong in their defense of Domenici and sizing up how the revelations would affect this legacy.

"I'll leave that for historians and other people to judge," said former Gov. Toney Anaya, a Democrat who ran a close race against Domenici in 1978.

Fox News Wants You To Be Mad About Assassin's Creed III's Evil George Washington DLC

Fox News Wants You To Be Mad About Assassin's Creed III's Evil George Washington DLCDid you know that there's a video game where George Washington is evil? And that it's made by the French?

Yesterday, when Ubisoft released the first part in their trilogy of downloadable content for Assassin's Creed III, Fox News wasn't pleased. The French? Evil George Washington? Surely somebody should be offended by this!

So they posted an article titled "French company releases video game depicting George Washington as villain to be assassinated."

Check out the first paragraph:

A day after the United States honored George Washington, a French software company released a video game that depicts the first president as a tyrant who hangs people and must be assassinated.

Just look at that lede. The subtle xenophobia, the muted anger. Written as if with trembling fingers and bulging eyeballs. HOW DARE THOSE GODDAMNED FROG-EATERS TURN OUR FIRST PRESIDENT EVIL.

The game, titled "Assassin's Creed III: The Tyranny of King Washington" and released Tuesday by Ubisoft, can be played on Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game presents an alternate reality that depicts Washington as "the former champion of American freedom turned power-mad overlord," according to its creators.

(Note: The Tyranny of King Washington cannot be played on Nintendo Wii. It can be played on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. A Wii U version is coming in the future. Also, The Tyranny of King Washington is not a game. It is a downloadable add-on to a game.)

"With the introduction of our first single-player episodic DLC 'The Tyranny of King Washington,' we figured we should reacquaint you with the hero you thought you knew," Ubisoft says in a statement on its website, underneath a promotional video showing an evil-looking Washington wearing a crown and gripping a throne with the American flag draped overhead.

It's smart, the way this article is constructed. The details are objective and (mostly) accurate, written in a way that might make you think "hey, maybe this author DOESN'T have an agenda." But it's the word positioning. The contrast between "United States" and "French software company." The subtle details, crafted to paint the ugliest picture possible for swarths of Fox News readers looking to get angry at video games. They even ask for comment from the estate of George Washington. (Note: the estate of George Washington "expressed no opposition" to the Assassin's Creed III DLC, probably because they are not insane.)

And the comments! Half of them call the article dumb; the other half are about as xenophobic and generally terrifying as you might expect from comments on Fox News. They're the scoop of hatred atop this glorious outrage sundae.

Accidental Shooting At Motor City Casino ? CBS Detroit

MotorCity Casino Hotel

MotorCity Casino Hotel (credit: Stephanie McClung/WWJ-TV)

DETROIT (WWJ) - Gamblers at Detroit?s Motor City Casino are describing a scary scene after a gun went off on the gaming floor overnight.

Witnesses say a woman was rushed to the hospital after she accidentally?shot herself in the leg.

One patron called WWJ Newsradio 950 as everyone was being cleared from the scene. She said, at first, no one knew what was going on.

?People started running ? and the guard told us to move out of the way, to go to the back of the casino because somebody was in there shooting,? said the woman, who didn?t want to give her name. ?So we ran to the back and we waited like about ten minutes. And when we went back to the front we could see the lady laying down. They said she had shot herself.?

She said she?s worried that something like this could happen ?? accident or not.

?If one person got in there with a gun ? no telling how many people are walking in there with a gun. There?s no metal detectors down there. Anybody can walk in there with a gun,? she said.

A spokesperson for the casino said the woman had a concealed weapons permit. She described it as ?an accidental discharge,? but said it?s still illegal for someone to bring a gun into a casino.

The incident remains?under investigation.

So far, casino management is not comment as to what might be done to beef up security.

Devon A Gem Of A Uk Destination

Rugged beauty, fascinating maritime history, rolling hills and gorgeous coastlines all await you in Englands highly desirable county of Devon. Whether you are looking for a bit of action on your holiday or you prefer to bask in tranquillity, it is one of the UKs leading vacation destinations. Holiday cottages in Devon are conveniently located throughout the county and can be rented at anytime of the year for any duration.

Where to go

Dartmoor: This is the area's most famous moor, where wildlife meets history and culture. The heritage of Dartmoor goes all the way back to Neolithic times and this living, breathing, working landscape is just as rich and fascinating now as it was hundreds of years ago.

Dartmoor served as the inspiration for Conan Doyles classic Sherlock Holmes tale, The Hound of Baskervilles, and was also the background for the Hollywood blockbuster film, War Horse.
With 368 square miles to explore, you can walk for hours without seeing another soul, or you can visit some of the renowned attractions - such as Haytor and the interesting Dartmoor Prison Museum. If you're seeking a bit more of a thrill, why not cycle the Drakes Trail or encounter the herds of pure-breed Dartmoor ponies that wander freely along the trails. Dartmoor can easily be reached from many holiday cottages in Devon and it is certainly worth exploration.

The English Riviera: The seaside town of Torquay is the gateway to the English Riviera and is simply bursting with maritime history. In the early 19th century, the town began to develop into a fashionable seaside resort, frequented by members of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars (while the navy was anchored in the bay). Later, the area became increasingly popular with the crme de la crme of Victorian society and the towns fame spread like wildfire.

Today, the picturesque town plays host to a number of sporting events and festivals, including the Rivieras very own regatta. For those looking to take part in some sporting events of their own, Torquay is the perfect area for canoeing the coves, running alongside the water or participating in the unusual sport of coasteering. Located near many holiday cottages in Devon, Torquay is ideal for a serene sabbatical as well as a sports-oriented getaway.

South Devon: The south of the county is home to some of Englands most beautiful coastlines. Whether you are looking to engage in watersports or simply take strolls along the beach, there is no right way to enjoy this gorgeous area.

With a landscape of rolling hills and a backdrop of Dartmoor the south has a unique character; it has become home to many artists and musicians who turn to its natural beauty for inspiration.
Art galleries, music festivals and alternative lifestyle centres can be found throughout the area, all within walking or driving distance of many holiday cottages in Devon.

China to hit 246m Android and iOS devices this month, taking it past the US to become world?s largest market

This month, China is slated to pass the US to become the world?s top country for active Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. In January 2013, China and the US had roughly the same active device installed base: 221 million and 222 million, respectively. By the end of February 2013, China will have an estimated 246 million devices compared to 230 million in the US.

The findings come from Flurry, which tracks over 2.4 billion anonymous app sessions per day across more than 275,000 apps around the world, and says it can reliably measure activity across more than 90 percent of the world?s smartphones and tablets. Based on historical growth trends as well as the number of detected devices per country through the first of this month, the company estimated its numbers for the end of this month.

Here?s the historic data with the projection in graph form:

SmartDevice InstalledBase China vs US Feb2013 resized 600 China to hit 246m Android and iOS devices this month, taking it past the US to become worlds largest market

If China really does claim gold from the US in February, it will be exactly 12 months since Flurry reported that the country had become the world?s fastest growing market for smartphones and tablets. The company unsurprisingly doesn?t expect the US to take back the lead from China, citing the countries? populations: just over 310 million versus over 1.3 billion, respectively.

The only country that could feasibly take that spot is India, which has a population of just over 1.2 billion. Yet it is currently in 10th place with 19 million smartphones and tablets, according to Flurry:

SmartDevice InstalledBase Jan2013 resized 600 China to hit 246m Android and iOS devices this month, taking it past the US to become worlds largest market

Interestingly, both the US and China have more than five times the active installed base than that of the UK, the world?s third largest market. Furthermore, both countries continue to see rapid device adoption.

China may no longer lead the world in growth, but it still commanded an impressive 209 percent rate on top of a base of 71 million devices from January 2012. The below chart excludes countries with less than half a million devices as of January 2012:

SmartDevice GrowthRates Jan2013 resized 600 China to hit 246m Android and iOS devices this month, taking it past the US to become worlds largest market

Only Columbia, Vietnam, Turkey, Ukraine, and Egypt grew faster than China. Year-over-year, compared to January 2012, the US added 55 million new devices, while China added 150 million new devices. Flurry says China would have passed the US earlier, given its growth rate, but the American holiday season delayed the inevitable for an additional two months.

"Live Pink, Bleed Orange" Lady Vols game touches Head Coach Holly Warlick

Sunday night the Lady Vols turned in their orange and white uniforms for pink ones.

It was the annual "Live Pink, Bleed Orange" game to raise awareness about breast cancer.

This year, for Lady Vols Head Coach, Holly Warlick, the color pink took on a special meaning.

The traditional colors of orange and white took a backseat on Sunday.

Sunday afternoon it was all about pink and breast cancer awareness.

"There is no better vehicle than the Lady Vols to get word out and spread awareness about breast cancer," said Amy Dunaway with Susan G. Komen.

Dunaway and her crew with Komen Knoxville sold pink pom poms outside Thompson-Boling Arena Sunday to increase the presence of pink inside.

Pink was on everything from shoes to whistles to Holly Warlick.

This game meant something different this year. Holly's sister, Marion, was diagnosed with breast cancer in August.

"I couldn't understand it, because?I didn't feel bad," explained Marion Ferrill, "I could have been depressed but I didn't know what for, I didn't know anything yet."

The cancer was found through a routine mammogram. That is something?Holly and Marion?encourage all women to get.

"You do need to sit and look at my case and everybodys, I'm not the only one out there. If you do this it will save your life and?I hope that's what they come away with."

The game ball Sunday night?went to Holly's sister.

Holly explained, "I gave her a ball and said she's my greatest hero because she is, because as we are battling the game, that is a battle of life."

Currently, Marion?is cancer free?and both sisters hope it stays that way, "We've gotta stay on this and find a cure, because it's just everyone you know has been touched by it."

This game was a part of the Play 4Kay women's basketball initiative. It is an organization named for the former North Carolina State Head Women's Basketball Coach, Kay Yow, who died in 2009.

Also, Holly Warlick along with LSU's Head Coach, Nikki Caldwell, have started "Champions For A Cause" after Holly and Marion lost their grandmother to cancer.?

You can head online through?Monday night to bid in a silent auction to raise money to find a cure.

The British are rather picky about their scandals | CatholicHerald.co.uk

We would rather be outraged by Catholics and horses than by state institutions

When I was in Sicily last month I made a point of eating all the local delicacies including polpette di cavallo ? that is meatballs made out of horsemeat. I have eaten horsemeat in lots of other places too ? in Puglia, in Piedmont, and in Switzerland. Lovely stuff.

Of course the British do not like horsemeat. They associate it with foreigners and foreign ways. Hence the current horsemeat scandal which dominates the media. It seems that this horsemeat being sold as beef has its origins in Romania. Nasty foreign meat is soiling our pure British beef.

But isn?t this the wrong scandal? There is nothing wrong with eating horse as such. Lots of people do it. This is not a horsemeat scandal, it is a labelling scandal: people have falsely labelled horse as beef. This leads one to ask: can we trust anything we read on a label? So let us leave the equine angle to one side, and concentrate on what really matters, namely that there has been a huge conspiracy of deception in the food industry, and that is simply not acceptable, especially given our belief, up to now at least, that all our foods were meticulously labelled.

And there is another scandal too: so many of us in Britain are eating very cheap ready made meals. This points to a depressing fact. We are constantly being told that we must eat healthily, but judging by the volume of sales of such cheap ready made meals, many of us simply cannot afford to eat healthily. This brings back to us, surely, that the biggest problem contemporary Britain faces is still poverty. But that may be a scandal that Britain would rather not face.

It seems we are rather picky with regard to our scandals in Britain. Again and again in the last few days we have had an outpouring of hatred towards the Pope who is accused of complicity in child abuse, with no real hard evidence to justify this. There are clerics who have been complicit, but their names are now forgotten: the German Pope is the one who must bear the blame; after all, he was in the Hitler Youth. If a scandal has a foreign angle to it, that will play well with the xenophobic public. And of all foreigners, Germans are clearly the best for this purpose.

Yet consider the question of the BBC and the NHS, both of which made it possible for Jimmy Savile to abuse maybe hundreds of victims. But of that we now hear nothing.

And what about Stafford hospital? How many people have been sacked, let alone imprisoned, for the culpable neglect of hospital patients? But we had all rather talk about horsemeat. God forbid we should breathe a word of criticism of the NHS or the BBC.

The horsemeat obsession shows us the British media at its worst, dangerously out of touch with reality.

Sony PS4 to reportedly support PS3 games streamed over the internet

According to the latest report by The Wall Street Journal, Sony will be adding support for playing games streamed over the internet in the upcoming PlayStation 4 console, said to be unveiled during the February 20 event.

This shouldn?t come across as a big surprise as Sony recently acquired Gaikai, a cloud-based gaming service specializing in streaming games over the internet. However, it seems the streaming feature for the PS4 will be limited to streaming previous generation PS3 titles, at least initially.

We have reported in the past that Sony will be adopting AMD processors with x86 architecture for the PS4, which means it will lose compatibility with PS3 titles. However, with the help of this cloud streaming service, you could still be able to play PS3 games on your PS4, without having the actual game with you.

It remains to be seen if Sony will limit the functionality of this service to only stream PS3 titles and only to the PS4.

Chinese New Year Celebration Sweeps Through Flushing

NEW YORK?As the dancing dragon teased a delighted crowd, they reached, trying to touch it as if it would give them good luck for the year ahead.?

But it is the end of the Year of the Dragon, and time to celebrate the Year of the Snake.

Thousands marched in the Chinese New Year parade in Flushing, Queens, on Saturday, while others lined the streets to watch; entertained by costumes, music, and colorful dragons.

\>");

Sean Dou, 34, who hails from from Mainland China, said the parade connects all Asians together.

?It ties the Chinese people together; not just the Chinese, also the Koreans [and all Asians],? he said. Dou and his wife Vanessa Bai were watching the parade, enjoying the celebration of traditions.

The Chinese calendar differs from the Western (Gregorian) calendar, so the beginning of the Chinese New Year falls on a different day every year, with dates ranging between late January and late February. The Chinese zodiac is a rotating cycle of 12 years, with each year being represented by an animal, this year being the snake.

Celebrations of the Chinese New Year last for two weeks and end on the 15th day with the Lantern Festival (Feb. 24 this year).

About 1 million Asians, half of which are Chinese, live in New York, according to the 2010 Census. And around half of all Asians live in Queens.

Cathy Wang lives in Flushing and is part of the Divine Land Marching Band, which consists of practitioners of the spiritual practice Falun Gong, who wish to revive the values of traditional Chinese culture. Band members wear colorful attire reminiscent of the Tang Dynasty.

Wang said traditional Chinese culture is for everyone because it is tied to universal values. Stemming from the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, Chinese culture traditionally guided human beings by setting a high moral standard.

?It?s very important; I think traditional Chinese culture doesn?t just belong to Chinese, it belongs to all human beings,? Wang said.?

However, over the years, the parade has been targeted by groups backed by the Chinese Communist Party, extending the Party?s persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China to the United States. In previous parades, members of the band have been attacked and heckled. Two years ago, a Chinese man was arrested after jumping the police barrier and destroying a banner carried by Falun Gong participants.?

Wang sees the marching band?s success on Saturday as evidence that the persecution in China can?t carry over into America.

?Here in New York, in the U.S., we can practice our beliefs freely, and we are very welcomed in our society,? she said. ?And every year we are invited to celebrate the Chinese New Year, and we hear overwhelming feedback that people love to see us.? The band is highly regarded because of their discipline and music, as well as their very beautiful uniforms, she said.

People traveled to Flushing on Saturday to watch the parade from across New York, New Jersey, and Long Island.

Kevin Miller, 31, from Brooklyn and in administration at the City University of New York, came to Flushing for the first time to see the parade.?

?It?s amazing that there are so many cultures in one place,? he said. ?Only an hours ride to come here; it?s pretty awesome.??

Dayong Li, 48, of New Jersey, stood after the parade watching fireworks crackle. He said that?s part of the tradition, too; to drive away evil ghosts and other bad spirits, and to help bring in the new year.

The significance of celebrating Chinese culture, he said, is that there are so many Chinese people in New York, ?who want to keep our culture, who want to keep the tradition.?

Alfa Romeo making its U.S. return after 18 years

It was already building cars by the time Henry Ford switched on his first moving assembly line, but despite a long and proud history both on the road and on the track, you may never have heard of Alfa Romeo and almost certainly may never have driven one.

The Italian manufacturer of the slick little sports car Dustin Hoffman drove in ?The Graduate,? Alfa Romeo abandoned the U.S. market in 1995, the victim of endemic quality problems and fast-shrinking sales. But with its parent Fiat SpA now married to Detroit?s Chrysler, Alfa is getting ready to stage a long-awaited comeback.

An all-new supercar, the Alfa Romeo 4C, will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show less than a month from now and then start rolling into U.S. showrooms before year-end. If all goes according to plan, the Italian maker hopes to quickly add three more models and target more established European luxury marques like BMW, Jaguar and Audi.

The news is resonating loudly among a small but devoted group of ?Alfisti? who have watched with disappointment as the Fiat subsidiary repeatedly postponed plans for a comeback. Indeed, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne made that one of the key elements of his turnaround plan after the maker took control of Chrysler following its 2009 bankruptcy.

But while most of the Chrysler revival strategy has gone according to plan, Alfa?s return soon fell behind schedule, and during a media roundtable held during the North American International Auto Show last month, Marchionne signaled yet another delay, noting problems with the powertrain planned for the 4C.

The Detroit Bureau: Tesla-NY Times Dispute Sparking Larger Debate

It just didn?t have the right feel and sound, the chief executive lamented, asserting that if Alfa couldn?t come up with a ?Wop engine,? it wasn?t going to come back to the States. Apparently, that motivated the troops. Barely two weeks later, plans for the 4C were finalized.

?This undertaking to bring Alfa back is a one-shot deal,? Marchionne cautioned. ?We are not going to do this twice.?

Today part of the Fiat empire ? which includes not only the Fiat and various Chrysler brands but also Maserati and Ferrari ? Alfa Romeo debuted on June 24, 1910, the product of a French consortium and Italy?s Nicola Romeo. The name was short for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, or the Lombard Automobile Factory.

The company quickly built up a strong reputation for its performance in motor sports and for its striking, street-legal sports cars. But its fortunes rode a roller-coaster before Fiat took Alfa over in 1986. Things haven?t done much better since then, and many industry observers believe the return to the U.S. could be Alfa?s make-it-or-break-it move. If the strategy succeeds, Alfa hopes to more than triple sales to 500,000 over the next several years, the U.S. market accounting for nearly 20% of that volume.

The Detroit Bureau: As Truck Wars Heat Up Ram Ramps up Production

Fiat has offered a first look at the new Alfa 4 C supercar, three advance images closely resembling the concept car first unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show ? and quickly going on to win an assortment of awards across Europe. The latest kudo comes from Britain?s popular What Car? magazine, which recently named it the ?Most Exciting Car of 2013.?

Alfa is aiming for the ?tip of the spear,? echoed auto analyst Joe Phillippi, of AutoTrends Consulting, staging its return with a striking ?halo car? that won?t get lost in the crowd. It will feature track-ready technologies including an ultra-light carbon fiber chassis and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that Alfa hints will be one of the most powerful in the segment, at least in terms of the power-to-weight ratio, a more accurate measure of performance than raw horsepower.

Though the maker is saving key details for the Swiss debut, industry reports suggest the Alfa Romeo 4C will likely come in somewhere between $75,000 and $100,000 and, ?at that price, I?m sure their volume expectations will be modest,? said Phillippi, ?though they?ll probably meet them.?

Longer-term, the Fiat subsidiary will add more product to broaden its range ? including an affordable sports car it has agreed to develop in a new partnership with Mazda Motors. The Japanese maker will use its version of that 2-seater to replace the aging MX-5 Miata model.

Part of the challenge for Alfa will be standing out in an increasingly crowded and competitive market ? a challenge similar to the more mainstream Fiat brand which got off to an extremely slow start after its late 2011 return to the States.

The Detroit Bureau: Chevy Stuggles to Kickstart Slow-Selling Malibu Sedan

Like Fiat, Alfa will have to rebuild a reputation tarnished by the poor quality of the products it rolled out in the late 1980s and ?90s. ?They will have to pass muster,? stressed analyst Phillippi, ?and show they can get fit, finish and refinement right.? There are too many other options available otherwise.

The fact that a generation of American buyers has had little experience with Alfa is both good news and bad for the brand?s planned comeback. It will take some creative marketing ? and plenty of dollars ? to rebuild awareness, company officials acknowledge. On the other hand, the hip, young and affluent buyers the brand covets will largely have little direct knowledge of Alfa?s past problems.

Regaining a foothold in the U.S. could be the breakthrough Alfa needs. But if it doesn?t succeed? Senior Volkswagen officials, including CEO Martin Winterkorn, openly covet the Italian marque. For now, Fiat chief Marchionne insists Alfa isn?t for sale. And if the 4C succeeds it won?t need to be. But if the U.S. revival falls flat, well, all bets are off.

Screenshot Support for Windows Phone 7.8 [updated]

The screenshot feature should be easy to implement on WP 7.8 .. All it takes is a "take photo" button which appears on the app in the multitasking screen, if tapped for more than 2-3 seconds... The OS will then automatically create the photo and add it in a "Screenshots" folder with a generic file name such as "screenshot_001" or something like that.

Please take this feature in consideration for future WP 7.8 updates!

Thank you, have a nice day!

University of Colorado joins McDonald's, others to tout healthy food

As McDonald's cuts salt in its hamburgers by 10 percent, it will have to adapt thousands of trigger-activated salt shakers, each used hundreds of times a day by burger flippers at the 34,000-restaurant chain .

But it's exactly that kind of mind-boggling volume ? 69 million customers a day worldwide ? that attracted the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center into a partnership with the golden arches.

"I take the world as it is, not necessarily as I wish it were," said the center's James Hill, in an Aurora McDonald's with the chain's national director of nutrition. CU is working with McDonald's, as it has with Disney, "because that's where kids are coming."

Hill and McDonald's senior nutrition director Cindy Goody were in Aurora to promote "5th Gear Kids," a partnership launched in the fall among CU, Children's Hospital Colorado and food purveyors, including King Sooper's, Arby's, Subway and others.

Students in Aurora and Cherry Creek schools can earn points when they buy healthier menu items and meet fitness challenges. Rewards include sports gear and other prizes.

Physicians and nutrition advisers say their health admonitions are often overwhelmed by billions of dollars a year in mass advertising for soda, french fries, candy, and salty, fatty foods. Hill and other researchers argue, though, that food sellers can put similar high-visibility efforts into healthy menu items and messages of moderation.

"There's no way we can do this without the collaboration of industry," said Pam Coxson, a University of California at San Francisco co-author of a new report analyzing the health benefits of sodium reduction.

Researchers used computer modeling to show that reducing sodium intake to even the upper level of federal nutrition guidelines would save 500,000 to 850,000 lives in 10 years, through fewer strokes and heart attacks.

Childhood obesity, meanwhile, has been on the rise, with Colorado the second-fastest growing state. More than one-quarter of Colorado children are overweight or obese.

Menu switches won't work unless balanced with fitness, Hill said.

"If kids aren't active," he said, "nothing they eat will keep them healthy."

U.P. Facebook Page Reunites Lost Pets With Owners ? CBS Detroit

By RENEE PRUSI, The Mining Journal

MARQUETTE (AP) ? Lifelong Laurium resident Vicky (Jurmo) Bastian is an animal lover who doesn?t just say she cares about pets: She does something about it.

She is the founder of the Facebook page Lost & Found Paws of the U.P., an online place that?s become a godsend for Upper Peninsula people trying to find missing dogs, cats and other pets, The Mining Journal of Marquette reported.

A popular FB page almost from its start, L&FP became even more well known after helping to reunite a downstate man, Scott Wilson, with his beloved boxer Gracie, who had run off into the woods along M-28 near Deerton after a traffic accident in January.

Bastian?s relationship with pets goes back a long way.

?How long have I had dogs? Forever. As long as I can remember, I?ve always had a dog in my house,? Bastian said. ?I love cats but never had one. And now I am allergic to them so I can?t have them.?

With ease, Bastian ticks off the various breeds that were part of her life growing up.

?Two German shepherds, three boxers, three beagles, two springer spaniels, a chocolate Lab,? she said. ?And the first dog I remember was part Airedale. The dogs kind of overlapped, but we were never without one.?

Bastian said her husband John had one dog while growing up.

?Now he doesn?t really have a choice,? she said. ?He?s a dog lover.?

The Bastians have three dogs at present: Abby, a 9-year-old boxer; Bella, a 3-year-old beagle; and Sofee, a 9-month-old boxer puppy.

?Are my kids dog lovers? Oh, gosh. Yes. My two sons each have two dogs,? she said. ?When we all get together, it?s a zoo.?

Now retired, Bastian said she spends ?most of my life on the computer,? which led to her starting L&FP on Dec. 27, 2011.

?For the four months before I had been posting about missing pets on my personal page but it was overwhelming for my friends,? she said. ?My granddaughter Kailee helped me design the (L&FP) page.

?I started with local dogs. The first one was Tippy, who was missing from Hancock. She was a husky and we never did find her. It brings tears to my eyes, thinking about her. When a dog is missing, I feel like it?s my own pet.?

What started out small as a place for Copper Country residents to post information about lost or found animals soon grew.

?I never expected this. I thought maybe we?d get a couple hundred `likes? on Facebook,? she said. Instead, L&FP has nearly 2,300 and continues to add new fans.

?Almost right from the start, every time I turned on the computer, there were more people (who liked the page),? Bastian said.

This really started to get busy when Diesel the dog was lost while its owner, a Chicago resident, was hiking in the Porcupine Mountains in the western U.P. Bastian not only posted information so others could be on the lookout for the missing pooch, she helped in the search, bringing a live trap in hopes of helping capture the dog on the run.

?There were no sightings of him,? she said. ?But then two ladies who were camping found Diesel trapped in an outhouse. The door pushed in, so once he was inside, he couldn?t get out. He would have died if they hadn?t found him.?

And reuniting the dog with its owner might have been tough if so many people didn?t know about Diesel being missing through the Facebook updates.

?Gracie?s case, within a day of that, we had 100 likes. I couldn?t keep up with the notifications,? Bastian said.

The volume of posting is sometimes overwhelming, so Bastian has recruited some help, with Kerri Willey in the Marquette area and Dawn Hammond, who will soon be on board from the Delta County area. Another former helper, Laurie Rivas, has relocated from Iron Mountain to Texas, but still posts to help L&FP.

?What?s funny is that I haven?t met any of these women personally,? Bastian said. ?I don?t know them, really, but I feel like I do. They are all such wonderful people.
