Dr Pepper maker fills out 10-calorie lineup

(AP) ? When it comes to the calories in diet soda, Dr Pepper thinks 10 is the new zero.

Starting next month, the country's No. 3 soft drink company plans to roll out 10-calorie versions of five of its big biggest soda brands: 7-Up, Sunkist, Canada Dry, RC Cola and A&W Root Beer. The drinks are an extension of its Dr Pepper Ten, which was launched last year as a better-tasting alternative for men who don't like the image or taste of diet soda.

But the new 10-calories sodas, which were tested in select markets this year, are being marketed to both men and women.

Unlike traditional diet sodas that use only artificial sweeteners and have zero calories, Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. says its 10-calorie sweetener mix has just enough high-fructose corn syrup to overcome any reservations people might have about the weak or cloying taste of diet drinks. And by taking away most the calories ? a can of regular typically has about 150 calories ? the company is washing away much of the guilt.

Dr Pepper isn't alone in trying to redefine the image of diet soda. With soda frequently blamed for fueling obesity rates, executives at Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. are also convinced that producing better-tasting diet sodas can reverse a steady decline in overall soda consumption that began in 1998. That's despite the growing number of options soft drinks are competing with in the beverage aisle, such as flavored waters, sports drinks and teas.

Larry Young, CEO of Plano, Texas-based Dr Pepper Snapple Group, is confident the new lineup of 10-calories drinks can win back soda drinkers who quit or cut back to reduce their calorie intakes. Young noted that Dr Pepper Ten has already done the same since its launch last year.

The drinks will hit shelves nationwide at select outlets in January, and the company says one of its biggest ever national ad campaigns will follow in March. Rather than singling out men, the ads for the new drinks will target both sexes and play off the theme of "Get Both."

One TV ad shows a couple who can't agree on anything until discovering 7-Up with 10 calories. They're then shown in a variety of scenarios showing how they compromise; sitting in a pick-up truck that is hot pink, watching a cooking TV show that's interrupted by a football player barging through the set and drinking champagne by the fireplace while grilling a giant T-bone steak. At the end of the commercial, their cat barks.

Already, diet sodas account for about 20 percent of Dr Pepper's soda sales. Young said he sees that figure reaching between 40 to 50 percent in coming years.

The big question mark for the broader industry is whether a new generation of diet drinks can stem overall soda declines and ultimately boost consumption again.

At a Beverage Digest industry conference last week, PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi said she thinks a next wave of diet sodas will use a variety of sweeteners that have a range of calories, rather than all conforming to a single sweetener with zero calories as in the past.

Earlier this year, for example, PepsiCo introduced a mid-calorie version of its flagship soda called Pepsi Next that reduces the amount of high-fructose corn syrup by using artificial sweeteners. Although the drink hasn't made a big splash, Nooyi said its modest performance already makes it a good "line extension" for the brand.

Coca-Cola Co., meanwhile, has been more noncommittal about mid-calorie sodas. Sandy Douglas, who heads Coca-Cola's North America business, said at the same conference that the company didn't see the category generating "a tremendous amount of share and growth."

But the Atlanta-based company has been testing mid-calorie versions of its Sprite and Fanta that uses natural sweeteners to gauge interest.

As for the new lineup of 10-calorie drinks, Dr Pepper CEO Young said he's aware that the industry doesn't have a lot of patience in waiting to see whether new drinks will work, but that the company plans to stick by its new 10-calorie line-up over the long haul.

New Patti Smith Book: Smith Planning Sequel To Memoir 'Just Kids'

Patti Smith recently announced that she is planning a sequel to bestselling memoir Just Kids.

Smith won one of literature's most prestigious awards, the National Book Award, for the memoir in the Nonfiction category in 2010.

Just Kids chronicled the musician poet's tumultuous relationship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe. It contains lots of juicy tidbits and run-ins. Smith had dinner with Andy Warhol and chilled with Allen Ginsberg. She lived in the drug-addled world of the 60s and 70s. However, Smith seemed like she was trying to cram too much into one short book.

There seems like there's definitely more to Smith's story. In Just Kids, she was supremely focused on Mapplethorpe and not as much on herself. Smith feels the same, as she told Billboard "Just Kids was very focused on Robert and my relationship with Robert and wanting to be an artist, and the next book will be more, perhaps, music-based."

Smith also told Billboard, "I don't have a big rock 'n' roll lifestyle, a sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll story to tell. I think I have maybe a better story."

We are excited that she plans on perhaps leaving these aspects out of the new book. The parts of Just Kids where Patti Smith was more personal (talking about her childhood and early adolescence) were by far the most beautiful. We hope to see more of that kind of writing in her upcoming sequel.

Did you love Just Kids or hate it? Will you read the sequel? Let us know in the comments!

A bridge for action after Sandy Hook shootings

Americans were united over the weekend on the need for solutions to mass shootings like that at Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Connecticut. Now they must also deal with their respective fears over the different solutions being proposed.

By the Monitor's Editorial Board / December 17, 2012

Supporters of gun control gathered in front of the White House Dec. 14 during a vigil for the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. They called on President Obama to push for strong gun control laws.

As happened after the 9/11 attacks, Americans were united for a long moment last Friday when 20 small children and six adults were gunned down at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The country came together in yearning for ways to prevent yet another mass shooting, especially of children.

This moment of unity should not be forgotton as Americans now seem divided on solutions to stopping such violence. In fact, President Obama was careful in his comments following the tragedy not to lay down specific actions, only to say that ?meaningful action? must be taken. He, like many others, has seen how little was done after other mass slaughters in public places.

The Sandy Hook killings had two elements similar to many previous shootings: a shooter in need of mental treatment and the use of powerful ? and legal ? guns.

Those who oppose more gun regulations focus on the need to deal more effectively with the mentally ill ? just as they often say that it is criminals, not guns, who commit violence.

Those who favor more gun regulation say that the easier and quicker path is to tighten controls of the 300 million guns in circulation and curb access to guns by controlling unlicensed, private sellers.

This split is reflected in a Pew Research Center poll that shows 47 percent of Americans support of more gun restrictions, while 46 percent favor protection of gun rights. It also showed up over the weekend in reactions by political leaders.

?The more realistic discussion is, how do we target people with mental illness who use firearms?? said Rep. Mike Rogers (R) of Michigan, a former FBI agent. Another Republican congressman, Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas, suggested that the Sandy Hill school officials should have been armed, suggesting the killings could have been prevented that way.

The other side was just as specific. Congress must ?reinstate the assault weapons ban, limit the size of clips to maybe no more than 10 bullets per clip and ... make it harder for mentally unstable people to get guns,? said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D) of New York.

Perhaps the suggestion that was closest to a middle ground position came from Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I) of Connecticut. He called for a national commission on mass violence to make sure ?the heartbreak and anger we feel now is not dissipated over time or lost in legislative gridlock.?

This great divide over gun violence and gun rights does have one common denominator. Both sides have fears that drive their positions.

Those in favor of unregulated guns are afraid of losing their use of guns for sport, of losing an ability to deal with personal threats to themselves, or even of government someday acting against ?the people.?

Those who seek more gun regulation are afraid that without it, guns will ?get into the wrong hands? and inflict far more violence than other personal weapons like knives. They see more violence, either from legal guns used in personal, emotional arguments or the use of illegal guns in stranger-to-stranger killings.

The nation cannot move forward in ending mass shootings unless both sides acknowledge each other?s respective fears. A willingness to accept the vulnerability of the other?s fears is a way to develop a climate of trust ? or empathy ? that is necessary for compromise and solutions.

Trust requires that each side feel it won?t be exploited in negotiations over which solutions to focus on. It is the primary path to narrow down the expectations and emotions that surround the issue of public violence.

Many big cities, such as Boston and Philadelphia, have found ways to bring opposing sides together to deal with rampant gun violence. Those urban models of building trust among factions can serve the United States at a key moment when Americans feel some sense of group identity in solving a disturbing trend in mass shootings.

NBC Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel ... - Business Insider

Turkish media is reporting that veteran journalist Richard Engel, NBC's chief foreign correspondent and Middle East bureau chief, and his Turkish colleague Aziz Akyava? are currently missing in Syria.?

Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reports that Engel and Akyava? haven't been in contact with NBC News since Thursday morning.

John Cook of Gawker reports that NBC has been "asking every reporter who inquires about the report to participate in a news blackout," but the Turkish reports have already been referenced by journalists and others?thousands of times on Twitter.

Prominent investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill argues that NBC's news blackout should be respected, although the news has been picked up by outlets includling? The Daily Mail, The Houston Chronicle, and?The Atlantic Wire:

Turkish news channel NTV?notes that Turkish?journalists who have been arrested and detained in Syria do not have any information about the journalists' whereabouts.

[UPDATE 4:50 p.m.] John Cook at Gawker has published a response to readers wondering why Gawker?decided to publish their post against NBC News' wishes:

The rationale for the blackout was offered in off-the-record conversations, so I can't present their argument here. But I will say this: No one told me anything that indicated a specific, or even general, threat to Engel's safety. No one said, "If you report this, then we know, or suspect, that X, Y, or Z may happen." It was infinitely more vague and general than that.

As I wrote in the post, when the?New York Times?maintained a blackout about David Rohde, the rationale was clear: I was directly told that the?Times?had reason to believe that the people who had Rohde would harm him if news got out. There was nothing approaching that level of specificity or argumentation here. I would not have written a post if someone had told me that there was a reasonable or even remote suspicion that anything specific would happen if I wrote the post.

Also: There was in practice no blackout. Xinhua and Breitbart had published English language accounts. There were probably like 100 posts to Twitter per minute about him. This was a situation where the information was freely available on the internet, and in the region?these are large Turkish outlets reporting this information. It was out.

Opening Anthropology: An interview with Keith Hart (Part 2 of 3 ...

This interview is part of an ongoing series about open access (OA), publishing, communication, and anthropology. ?The first interview in this series was with Jason Baird Jackson (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3). ?The second interview, with Tom Boellstorff, is here. ?The third installment of this OA series is with Keith Hart.*? See Part 1 of this interview here.

Ryan Anderson: Earlier you referred to OA as ?a strategy of resistance to privatization of the commons?.? Can you elaborate on that point?

Keith Hart: I meant that private property is still the great unresolved contradiction of modern society, not least because its ubiquity often makes society invisible. For Rousseau, the invention of private property was the origin of social inequality. The liberal Enlightenment looked to anthropology for the knowledge needed to realize a democratic revolution against the Old Regime. Morgan (followed by Engels) used Rousseau?s framework to make the history of unequal society the main object of a democratic anthropology. More recently, L?vi-Strauss, Wolf and Goody renewed this tradition, each in their own way. Now David Graeber has taken it up again. But the ethnographic turn made this a marginal current in twentieth century anthropology.

I grew up in a working class district of Manchester. The doors of our houses had to be kept open for neighbors to come in and out as they wished. Even inside the house, bedroom and bathroom doors were never closed. Privacy was the opposite of being open to the free flow of solidarity. I thought that spirit had gone forever, but I found it again when I moved to France fifteen years ago. Here the tradition of people occupying the streets (manifestation) is very much alive and the notion of a public sphere that belongs to all is palpable.

In my lectures I refer to the example of a Masai warrior who works as a nightwatchman in Nairobi. He buys a watch with his wages. What could be more personal or private than a wristwatch, attached to your skin? He returns to the village and a friend immediately says ?Give me your watch?. He has to give him the watch. Why? The solidarity of age-mates, so vital for the defense of the village?s cattle, is undermined by distinctions based on private property. In our societies, we take private ownership for granted. The institutions that secure it for us are hidden most of the time. Only when we are relieved of our possessions or a contract is broken do we realize that we normally depend on the law; and we complain about the inadequacy of police protection.

Modern economics insists that individual exchange is universal, but the barter myth of money?s origins is based on the assumption of private property. All that is missing from barter is the money. In fact private property law has been invented independently only two or three times, by the Romans, the Chinese and maybe the Aztecs. It was invented by centralized states to secure the property of traders. The Romans made a distinction between rights in persons and rights in things. Ownership was normally based on having made something or using it; and this right was secured by being a member of a particular social group. Traders neither made nor used what they owned, but the state guaranteed their right to the thing against local brigandage, as they would put it.

There has never been a society so committed to private property as the United States and this goes with unusually weak social protection by the state. In the movie Bowling for Columbine, Michael Moore asks why American society is so prone to gun violence. He inserts a cartoon at one point to explain that it is because of the history of racism. But the cause is more plausibly an unchecked system of markets based on private property without the social protection of an effective welfare state. This also accounts, in my view, for the apparent anomaly of the US being the most modern society and the most religious. God and guns fill in for the welfare state. Canadians are both secular and less violent. The Europeans are hardly religious at all.

The euro crisis also hinges on privatization. After the Cold War ended, the Europeans decided that the winning side was the free market, forgetting their own long history of formal and informal public institutions shoring up markets. So they introduced a new currency to make a single market, without addressing the gap between North and South or developing fiscal institutions in common. They supposed that markets based on private property would lead them to political union. (The Americans, in contrast, fought a civil war before centralizing their currency.) The basic flaws in all this were hidden by the credit boom, but the financial crisis brought them out with a vengeance.

This is why I spoke of Marx?s early journalism. It underpinned his lifelong attempt to expose and replace an economy founded exclusively on private property. I am suggesting that, if we are distressed by what is going on in the universities today, we need to stand back and address fundamental issues first.

RA: You also highlighted what you call the tension between the maintenance of an intellectual commons and the conservation of ideas as private property.

KH: We still think of private property as belonging to living persons and oppose private and public spheres on that basis. But what makes property private is holding exclusive rights against the world. Abstract entities like governments and corporations, as well as individuals, can thus hold private property. We are understandably confused by this, especially since the corporations? rise to public power rests on collapsing the difference between real and artificial persons in economic law. This constitutes a major obstacle not only to the practice of democracy, but also to thinking about it. Sadly, it has become commonplace for intellectuals to obscure the distinction between living persons and abstractions, as well as between persons, things and ideas.

Private property has not only evolved from individual ownership to predominately? corporate forms, but its main point of reference has also shifted from ?real? to ?intellectual? property, that is from material objects to ideas. This is partly because the digital revolution in communications has led to the economic preponderance of information services whose reproduction and transmission is often costless or nearly so. A similar sleight of hand is at work here as in the claim to corporate personhood. If I steal your cow, its loss is material, since only one of us can benefit from its milk. But if I copy a CD or DVD, I am denying no-one access to it. Yet corporate lobbyists depend on this misleading analogy to influence courts and legislators to treat duplication of their ?property? as ?theft? or even ?piracy.?

The term ?information feudalism? is highly appropriate for our era. Human work was once conceived of as collective physical energy, as so many ?hands?. The internet has raised the significance of intangible commodities. Now that production of things is being replaced by information services, labor is increasingly understood as individual creativity, as subjectivity. And it is this shift that has been captured by big money in the claim that ?intellectual property? deserves closer regulation in the interest of its owners.

The fight is on to save the commons of human society, culture and ecology from the encroachments of corporate private property. This is no longer just a question of conserving the earth?s natural resources, although it is definitely that too, nor of the deterioration of public services left to the mercies of privatized agencies. Increasingly we buy and sell ideas; and their reproduction is made infinitely easier by digital technologies. So the larger corporations have launched a campaign to assert their exclusive ownership of what until recently was considered shared culture to which all had free and equal access. Across the board, separate battles are being fought over music, movies, literature, software, GMOs, pharmaceuticals, the internet and the universities without any real sense of the common cause that they embody.

RA: In your opinion, is this a conflict that can be resolved?? Is there some sort of middle ground solution here?

KH: Well, we do have to take on the corporations, but my answer is yes, there is a middle ground solution and it is one we are well-placed as anthropologists to make use of. Durkheim believed that individuality was more developed in societies with an advanced division of labor because of their increased interdependence. The problem is that this pervasive individualism makes it harder for us to perceive the work of society in shaping our lives. This is especially so in a regime of private property, where the collective forces underpinning individual ownership are for the most part invisible. His key idea was ??the non-contractual element in the contract??. In a market transaction, only the buyer and seller appear to be involved; but it rests on an invisible array of institutions ? of state law, social customs and shared history ? without which it could not take place. How can people be made more aware of the importance of this social glue in their lives?

Some three decades later, Marcel Mauss wrote his famous essay, The Gift, which may be seen as a renewal of his uncle?s mission to make the non-contractual element in the contract visible. But he focused on a range of phenomena that were more prominent in ??archaic?? societies than our own, systems of competitive gift-exchange. He saw these as an individualized variant of a more general form of obligatory community service (prestation). The principle of giving with the expectation of a return persists in societies dominated by capitalist markets. A cooperative socialist, Mauss worked for an anti-capitalist revolution, but one based on developing the human dimensions of market institutions that existed already. He considered the Bolshevik revolution?s violent repression of markets to have been a disaster.

For Mauss, being human always means reconciling freedom and obligation, individual and collective interests. The ??free gift?? is not the opposite of self-interested contracts. It is always interested and often a source of inequality. Nor is ??capitalism?? the whole story when it comes to the modern economy. The gift is the non-contractual element in the contract. By obscuring, marginalizing and even repressing the more humane aspects of markets as well as their intrinsic inequality, bourgeois ideology prevents us from seeing how our current practices might sustain new directions for the economy. Much more sustains the market than the exchange of spot contracts. Most contracts (notably relations of credit and debt) involve deferred payment and thus resemble gifts whose defining characteristic is delayed return. This is to say nothing of the role of institutions like the welfare state in capitalist societies.

Mauss introduced three new elements to his uncle?s original approach. First, he abandoned Durkheim?s sociological reductionism, seeking rather to identify social phenomena in their totality, a dynamic assemblage of persons, networks, groups, things and ideas more readily revealed through ethnography than by specialist disciplines. Archaic gift-exchange brings together individuals and communities, law and economy, magic and religion, art and technology. Mauss advocated an economic movement from below for contemporary societies, aiming at consumer democracy through a combination of cooperatives, mutual insurance and professional associations. The generosity of the archaic gift does not point to a non-market alternative, but rather to the humanity inherent in markets that remains to be liberated by such a modern movement.

Second, Durkheim oversimplified the contrast between primitive and modern societies. Against his uncle?s implicit evolutionism, Mauss held that all economies were plural in practice; indeed, the basic human economic arrangements co-exist in any society, a position later associated with Polanyi and revived by Graeber. It is counter-productive to imagine economic change as the radical replacement of one set of institutions by another. Third, Mauss had an inclusive vision of human history with the boundaries of local societies being pushed ever outwards. Both gift-exchange and markets extend society by taking members out of their locally grounded system of rights and interests to engage with foreigners. Markets and money in some form are universal, since no society can be self-sufficient. Where Malinowski opposed the Trobriand kula to money and markets, Mauss saw a parallel with the free market, at least with the invisible infrastructure of human expansiveness and trust that he believed made markets possible.

Mauss?s counter-intuitive idea that gifts and markets share a common human substance soon gave way to the old notion that they are each other?s opposite, now reified as ??gift economy?? versus ??market economy??, the very contrast that he wrote his essay to refute. He rejected brutal contrasts of this kind and that makes him an ideal starting-point in any search for a middle-ground between extremes of right and left.

?

In the final segment of this interview, we will bring these discussions about property, privatization, and the commons back to the issue of OA and the academy.? To be continued?

?

It?s so hard to see him going through this, and sometimes the ?It Gets Better? message is lost on a 12 year old who feels that middle school will never end?We cheered you on every Sunday night and agonized every time you had difficulties. My son was so incredibly thrilled when you two won last night (as was I!). Thank you for helping him see that not only DOES it get better, it gets AMAZING.

Kilmer-Purcell and Ridge seized the opportunity to make a young boy feel special. The men asked each of the teams on this year's show to send a message of support to Colin. The entire cast responded and the images were posted on the Beekman blog Thursday.

"We urge everyone who feels like they?re down-and-out to ?keep going, try as hard as you can, eventually someone will help you ? and you will win,? they added.

10 Gadgets and Apps to Keep Your Kids Safe

As every parent knows, it's a dangerous world out there. Whether it's a pedophile lurking in the aisles at Walmart, a cyber bully on Facebook or a case of SIDs that strikes in the crib, your child is in danger at every age.

As a new father, I worry about all the bad things that could happen to my young son both now and when he gets older. As a geek, I look to technology to solve the problem. Here are 10 tech tools I found that can help keep your kids safe.

Mommy I'm Here Child Locator ($24.95)

My son just started crawling and, if I take my eyes off of him for a minute, he's on the other side of the livingroom playing with things he shouldn't touch.. Pretty soon, he'll be walking and we'll have trouble keeping up with him in public places. Losing a child in a crowd is every parents' worst nightmare.

For just $25, the Mommy I'm Here Child Locator comes with two pieces: a cute teddy-bear shaped device that attaches to your child's ankle or wrist and a keychain transmitter for parents to hold. When you get separated from your kid at Toys R' Us, you simply hit a button on the transmitter and the child's anklet will emit a loud shrieking sound so you can easily find her.

Amber Alert GPS V3 ($199)

As my son gets older, he'll be heading off to school and participating in after-school activities like little league or, better still, computer club. My wife and I wouldn't want to give him a smartphone in elementary school, but we would feel a lot better if we could know where he was at all times.

The Amber Alert GPS V3 is small enough to fit in even a tiny pocket while tracking your child's location both indoors and outdoors, anywhere in the world. Amber Alert's management software allows parents to set geofencing zones in locations where the child should be so they can receive email or text alerts when the child enters or leaves a zone.

The device features an SOS button the child can hit in an emergency and the ability to conduct 2-way calls between parent and child. Amber Alert's service, which costs $14.99 to $24.99 a month, is also integrated with the National Sex Offender Registry to alert you when your kid is within 500 feet of an offender's home.

Prodigy Infant Car Seat with SmartScreen

Installing a car seat is an exercise in frustration. Every time my wife I need to transfer our base to a new car, it takes us a good 10 minutes and I always worry that maybe we didn't install it correctly, because our son's safety is on the line. Summer Infant's Prodigy Car Sear offers a high-tech solution to installation anxiety, providing a digital "SmartScreen" that lets you know whether your seat is properly attached.

HiSense BabySense V Infant Movement Monitor ($129)

At least 5 times a night I'll wake up and go check on my son in his crib, just to make sure he's still breathing. The HiSense BabySense V could do this work for me. As long as you place the device's two sensors underneath the baby's mattress, the system will alert you if the baby stops moving for more than a few seconds, allowing you to intervene if there's something wrong.

Vigilant PPS22BL 130dB Personal Alarm ($14.99)

Think of it as a car alarm for your teen. At first glance, the Vigilant PPS22BL looks like a simple keychain, but this device emits a 130dB ear-piercing alarm, which your child can use to scare off an attacker and alert passersby that she needs help. WIth its embedded strobe light, the PPS22BL can also help her find her way in the dark.

Net Nanny 6.5 ($28.99)

Sometimes the computer sitting in your living room can be more dangerous than anything your child will encounter outside. At 8 months old, my son has already shown a strong interest in my computer and my phone. By the time he reaches kindergarten, he could be surfing the web.

Whether your child is 5 or 15, you don't want him viewing illicit content or communicating with predators. Net Nanny 6.5 allows you to control what kinds of websites your child can view and what kinds of games he plays. The software even keeps tabs on your child's social networking activity and alerts you if your child is being cyber bullied or talking to strangers.

More: How to Talk to Your Kids About Internet Safety

KidSmart Vocal Smoke Detector ($39.95)

It's 3 a.m. and the kids are asleep downstairs while you snooze in the master bedroom with your spouse. Suddenly, you hear the smoke alarm and smell smoke, but the kids are separated from you and they may not know what to do. If only you could teleport downstairs, wake them up and tell them how to escape. Actually, you can do all of that except for the teleporting.

The KidSmart Vocal Smoke Detector allows you to record your voice telling the kids to wake up and giving them emergency instructions. When the device detects fire, it blasts your pre-recorded "wake up" message at an ear-popping 85 dB and then plays your escape instructions to help your children move to safety.

Dropcam HD Video Monitoring System ($149)

Much as I'd like to stand over my son's crib all afternoon and watch him all night, I often need to get things done while he sleeps. However, if I place a Dropcam HD Wi-Fi camera in front of his bed, I can watch his every move on my smartphone and get alerts if the camera detects enough movement to indicate he might be awake. If he is awake, I can talk to him on the Dropcam's speaker.

Because Dropcam stores its video in the cloud, I can log on at work and check on my son while mom is watching him in person. I can even turn the lights down in his room, because this camera offers really strong low-light performance and a smooth 30 fps.

Life360's simple, colorful interface puts icons for all of your family members onto a map and also shows you other key places around them, including hospitals, police stations and the homes of registered sex offenders.Best of all, LifeCam360's app and core service are free, though you may pay extra for premium features such as tracking a non-smartphone

Justice delayed -- and delayed and delayed

When pre-trial detention stretches on for weeks or months, a suspect's right to a "speedy and public trial" is undermined. In effect, a prison sentence is being served without the prisoner having been convicted.

That?s in the ideal world, the world of ?Law & Order? and ?Perry Mason.? Courthouses can also be dispiriting sinkholes where day after day lawyers, clerks, police, judges, parole officers, and social workers try to keep their heads up amid the wreckage wrought by violence, drugs, selfishness, and chronically bad choices. In a courthouse, humanity can too easily be reduced to perpetrators and victims. You can feel guilty just being there.

That?s why it is all the more tragic when someone innocent is sucked into ?the system? and becomes its victim.

In a Monitor cover story, Katy Reckdahl examines one particular problem with the judicial system: pretrial detention. An arrest can occur for any number of reasons ? from suspicion of involvement in a major crime to an infraction that edges just over the line from misdemeanor to felony. If an individual cannot raise the bail money, he or she can get stuck in jail.?

That wait can stretch for weeks or months as the case inches through a congested courthouse. In effect, imprisonment is taking place before the accused gets a fair trial.

There are half a million people in the United States in this predicament. Many of them, if eventually convicted, will already have served so much time in jail before their trials that they will not have to serve prison time. The tragedy is the innocent or those accused of small-time crime who get snarled in the system.

It is tempting to believe that an arrest is tantamount to a conviction, or to see bail as a form of punishment. Where there?s smoke, we often think, there?s fire. And there indeed are dangerous people who need to be detained to keep them from potentially harming others. But to keep someone locked up for an extended period simply because he or she cannot raise bail undermines the constitutional guarantee of a ?speedy and public trial.?

Even when jail time is warranted, it seldom improves lives (see our May 21 cover story on the struggle inmates face after being released). At best, jail is an opportunity to change a life for the better. More often, the opposite occurs. That adds to the problem of pretrial detention the possibility that marginally bad behavior will become worse behind bars.

In the great prison movie ?The Shawshank Redemption? (1994), the protagonist, Andy Dufresne, memorably remarks: ?The funny thing is ? on the outside, I was an honest man, straight as an arrow. I had to come to prison to be a crook.?

There are sincere people in and around the US criminal-justice system working on this. As you?ll see in our cover story, one promising approach is the supervised release of an arrested person after proper screening. As in most issues involving criminal justice, solutions aren?t always clear-cut. But the essence of the pretrial detention problem comes down to this comment from a specialist in Washington, D.C.: ?Dangerous people get out of jail, and people who are not dangerous but don?t have the money stay in jail.??

That doesn?t seem right. And it doesn?t seem beyond us to figure out how to reserve jail for the convicted.

Scientists discover evidence of giant panda's population history and local adaptation

Dec. 16, 2012 ? A research team, led by Institute of Zoology of Chinese Academy of Sciences and BGI, has successfully reconstructed a continuous population history of the giant panda from its origin to the present. The findings suggested whereas global changes in climate were the primary drivers in panda population fluctuation for millions of years, human activities were likely to underlie recent population divergence and serious decline. This work reveals a good example for assessing and establishing the best conservation method for other endangered species.

The latest study was published online in Nature Genetics.

The giant panda is the rarest member of the bear family. Looked upon as the ambassador for all endangered species, it is a well-recognized symbol of international wildlife conservation. The giant panda is currently threatened by continued habitat loss, human persecution, among others. Its dietary specialization, habitat isolation, and reproductive constraints have led to a perception that this is a species at an "evolutionary dead end," destined for deterministic extinction in the modern world.

In this study, researchers carried out whole genome resequencing of 34 wild giant pandas and found the current six geographic populations of giant panda could be divided into three genetic populations, including Qinling (QIN), Minshan (MIN) and Qionglai-Daxiangling-Xiaoxiangling-Liangshan (QXL). Through reconstructing giant panda's population history, they found several important evolutionary events such as two population expansions, two bottlenecks and two population divergences.

The giant panda has a very special bamboo diet, while its ancestor was omnivorous or carnivores. As early as about 3 Myr ago, they probably had already completed their dietary swift and pygmy panda emerged with bamboo as its primary diet. The warm and wet weather at that time provided ideal conditions for the spread of bamboo forests that further led to the first population expansion of giant panda. However, about 0.7 Myr ago, the panda population began to decline due to the two largest Pleistocene glaciations happened in China, and its first population bottleneck occurred at about 0.3 Myr ago. During that period, pygmy panda was gradually replaced by another subspecies -- baconi panda that has larger body size.

After the retreat of the Penultimate Glaciations, giant panda's second population expansion happened and it reached its population peak between 30~50 thousand years (kyr) ago. The warm weather in the Greatest Lake Period (30~40 kyr ago) and alpine conifer forest may play an important role in the flourishing of the panda population. However, during the period of last glacial maximum (LGM), the climate was cold, dry, and inhospitable with frequent storms and a dust-laden atmosphere. Under such harsh environment, extensive panda habitats were loss and its second population bottleneck occurred.

The more recent panda population history showed that the panda population separated into Qinling (QIN) and non-QIN populations at about 0.3Myr ago, and then the non-QIN cluster diverged into two populations, the Minshan (MIN) and Qionglai-Daxiangling-Xiaoxiangling-Liangshan (QXL) at about 2.8 KYA ago. Subsequently, the three populations were different in the ways of fluctuation. For example, there was a drastic decline in the QIN, a slight increase in the MIN and a more remarkable growth in the QXL populations.

Researchers identified the signals of panda's local adaptation. They found the largest group of selected genes in these populations was related to sensory system. However, the two genes, Tas2r49 and Tas2r3, were associated with bitter taste and were under directional selection between the QIN and non-QIN populations, showing no signal of directional selection between MIN and QXL populations.

As a form of olfactory communication, odor perception is crucial for reproduction and survival of giant pandas in the dense forest. Researchers found the MIN and QXL populations had fewer directionally selected genes than QIN and non-QIN, suggesting less variation happens in the selection processes between MIN and QXL. They also found the evidence that population fluctuations were driven by global climate shifts, but recent human activities have likely caused population divergence and the serious recent decline.

Shancen Zhao, Project Manager from BGI, said, "We have identified three genetic populations of giant panda for the current six geographic populations lived in western of China. The varied local adaptations found in our study provide invaluable resource for researchers to better select effective conservation methods to rescue the giant panda even other endangered species. The translocation of wild-caught individuals or releasing the captive-bred ones may be a feasible approach. "

Green Tips to Save Money around the House This Winter | Healthy ...

It?s already started snowing in Michigan, and that means we are hunkering down for a harsh winter ahead in so many states in the U.S.

We?re used to the temperatures dipping well below zero here, but winter also typically signifies bracing for a few months of outrageous utility bills due to cranking the heat to stay warm all winter long. However, this winter, my husband and I decided to instate a few green family tips when it comes to home energy?both to save money on utility bills and do our part to conserve energy.

Here are four green tips that will help you save money and energy around the house this winter.

1. Go natural to light the way

Yes, I realize the days are shorter and the nights longer during the winter. I drove home at 5pm yesterday afternoon and it was already dark outside! However, when we do get sun during the daytime, I make sure to open the blinds and curtains to let natural sunlight light up the rooms in my home when I can. Taking advantage of the sun not only saves on energy bills, it also helps my husband?s dour winter mood as he suffers from Season Affective Disorder (or SAD).

2. Unplug to save on phantom power drain

I always tell my kids to turn off the television, computer, stereo, or game system when they aren?t using them and they?ve gotten really good at respecting the environment in that way. So this year I added the rule of unplugging all electronic devices as well. This ensures that the power is totally cut?otherwise, even though they?re off, electronics continue to suck up ?phantom power,? which still converts to energy use on your electrical bills. To ensure you cut all power when devices aren?t in use, invest in power strips around the house.

3. Cut down on plastic consumption

I used to buy cases of bottled water every month for my family. And even though it did wonders for our health (compared to drinking sugary pop and juice), it wasn?t doing any good for the environment. So this fall I had a few water purifiers installed around our home so we could drink water from the tap and cut out our bottled water waste almost entirely. Plus, the filtered water has done wonders on our appliances?such as our home?s dishwasher, washing machine and water heater?they run much more efficiently due to the gentle water, and our clothes and dishes last longer too!

4. Set the timer on your home heating

The simplest way that we?ve conserved energy as a family so far this winter is with a programmable thermostat. Having control over our home heating has really lowered our utility bills. For instance, I set the timer to normal when we?re home, but I set it to automatically drop a few degrees when we?re at work and school, as well as when we?re in deep sleep, plus, throwing on an extra sweater or blanket while watching television or reading a book isn?t so bad when it saves vital resources. Teaching the family to bundle up rather than turn it up can save you a lot on home energy costs.
