Micki McWade: 10 Tips for a Sane Divorce: Five for You, Five for Me

Maintaining sanity during divorce, while large waves of unpredictable and conflicting emotions rise and fall, is an enormous personal challenge. Remaining sane and grounded, however, is our adult responsibility regardless of the temptation to think and act otherwise. Children need their parents more than ever and work responsibilities continue.

The definition of, and suggestions for maintaining sanity during a divorce differ, depending on whether you are the initiator of the divorce or the one who is left. The emotional state and perspectives are quite different. Here are some suggestions for each perspective.

FOR THE INITIATOR:

1. Realize that you are further along emotionally than your spouse. Usually the initiating spouse has considered this decision for some time before the announcement is made to his or her spouse.

2. Remember that rejection is always a negative experience. Even though there may have been discussion about the marriage not working well, hope for future improvement is usually present and the initial announcement of divorce is experienced as a shock.

3. Anticipate change. Your spouse will have his or her own needs, so no one gets everything she or he wants. The expectation that life will be the same after divorce, with the exception of your spouse being gone, is unrealistic. For longer marriages, property will be divided and the children's time will be shared with the other parent. Children will have their own surprising reactions.

4. Expect conflicting emotions. Divorce is a huge life transition with surprises all along the way. Even if you are the one who wants the divorce, feelings of loss are inevitable. Those who are already seeing another person may not realize this at first but unraveling a significant relationship is painful.

5. Allow your children to adjust to the separation for at least a year before introducing them to a new partner. Introducing someone new before the separation agreement is signed can wreak havoc in divorce negotiations and will be painful for the children. Your happiness about the new person does not mean the kids will be happy about it.

FOR THE NON-INITIATOR:

1. Understand that your spouse has had time to adjust to the idea of divorce, having thought about it long before the announcement was made. You may wonder how he or she could be okay when you feel so badly. You will improve in time too.

2. Be aware that men and women do divorce differently. Men are pragmatic. They are usually bottom-line focused and go for the best deal they can get. Women experience the settlement as an indication of their worth to their husband or partner. They are often shocked and hurt by their partner's proposals. Women are naturally more communal and their instinct is usually inclusive, while in the case of divorce, men can be exclusive.

3. Focus on yourself and avoid (as much as you can) getting wrapped up in wondering about how your mate is doing, what she's saying, who he's with, etc. This will lead to feelings of victimization and depression. Focus instead on what you can do for yourself and your children. Read a book, listen to music, exercise, read stories to your kids, volunteer for an organization, Don't isolate yourself. Join groups that interest you. Gain independent experience, try new things.

4. Remember that your children need you. They still need a functional parent even if you are very upset. Tell them your upset is temporary and you will feel better soon. That will give them hope that the future will be better. Take care of yourself and find support. Call your local churches to find a divorce support group. Read supportive literature.

5. Try not to speak badly of the parent who left. A common misconception is that the one who left the home left both the spouse and the children. That's not usually an accurate interpretation and hurts the children. He or she has left the marriage, not the kids and in fact, not their spouse entirely. The relationship has changed but a co-parenting relationship will go on forever.

Science Diction: The Origin Of 'Stethoscope'

The first stethoscope, invented by the French physician Ren? Laennec, was simply a hollow wooden or ebony tube. Laennec named the device using the Greek roots stethos, or chest, and skopein, to look at or to observe. Medical historian Howard Markel discusses how Laennec came up with the invention. Unlike the stethoscope familiar to patients today, the original device was a simple tube.

France and Germany to propose changing EU treaties (AP)

STRASBOURG, France ? President Nicolas Sarkozy appeared to temper his calls for the European Central Bank to play a bigger role in solving Europe's debt crisis as he agreed to a German effort to unite the troubled 17-nation eurozone more closely.

Speaking after meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Premier Mario Monti on Thursday, Sarkozy said "propositions for the modification of treaties" would be presented in the coming days.

He wouldn't elaborate on what these changes may be but said they would be ready in time for the next EU leaders summit on December 9. Treaty changes are a notoriously laborious endeavor, requiring the agreement of all 27 EU nations, including non-euro countries such as Britain and Poland.

Merkel said the treaty changes would "make clear that we must take steps toward a fiscal union to express the conviction that we know policies must be more closely coordinated if you have a common, stable currency."

"It is political confidence in Europe that has been lost ? we can only win it back politically," Merkel said.

This was the first meeting of the three leaders since Monti took over last week following mounting market concerns over Italy's huge debt, which stand at euro1.9 trillion ($2.6 trillion), or a huge 120 percent of economic output. Europe's current anti-crisis measures are too not big enough to deal with Italy's debt mountain.

Sarkozy said the three leaders had agreed to meet again "very soon" in Rome at Monti's invitation to continue their three-way dialogue.

The meeting in Strasbourg, France comes amid signs that even Germany and France ? the eurozone's two biggest economies ? are not immune from the crisis that's already seen three relatively small countries bailed out.

All three leaders said they would do what it takes to stabilize the situation and save the euro.

"We want the euro, we want a strong, stable euro ... we will do everything to defend it," Merkel said.

France has been reluctant to resort to changes to EU treaties to improve the way the eurozone countries work together and set policies and prevent future crises. Germany had pushed for such changes, saying voluntary pledges by national governments are no longer enough to boost market confidence.

Merkel insisted that the proposed changes would "not deal with the European Central Bank," which she stressed was responsible for monetary, not fiscal, policy. Sarkozy did not push for a greater role at their closing press conference, while Merkel insisted on the bank's independence.

"In the treaty changes, we are dealing with the question of a fiscal union, a deeper political cooperation ... there will be proposals on this, but they have nothing to do with the ECB," Merkel said.

Many think the ECB is the only institution capable of calming frayed market nerves and Merkel's continued dismissal of a greater ECB role knocked market sentiment and stocks all round Europe were trading lower once again.

Potentially, the ECB has unlimited financial firepower through its ability to print money. However, Germany finds the idea of monetizing debts unappealing.

Merkel also maintained her opposition to the European Commission's new drive for eurobonds.

Germany has opposed the use of eurobonds and has long called on fiscally wayward member states to clean up their own houses with as little outside intervention as possible. A big worry for Germany is that its low borrowing costs would get diluted if eurobonds came into issue and it would then be forced to pay higher rates to tap bond markets.

"It would be completely the wrong signal to lose sight entirely now of these differing interest rates, because they are a pointer to where something still needs to be done and where we need to go further," she said.

Monti, meanwhile, reiterated his pledge to balance Italy's budget by 2013 though he sidestepped the question on whether achieving that aim would require more austerity measures, and if so, whether it risked triggering a recession in the eurozone's third largest economy.

Romo looks to remain perfect on Thanksgiving

Tony Romo

By JAIME ARON

updated 6:05 p.m. ET Nov. 22, 2011

IRVING, Texas - The first time Tony Romo started a Thanksgiving game for the Dallas Cowboys "Romo-mania" was so frenzied that a group of fans strung together the letters in his name and hung it alongside the Ring of Honor at Texas Stadium.

Security guards made the fans take it down before kickoff, which sure looked foolish considering what Romo did next: five touchdown passes, tying a club record, all in just the first three quarters. Club owner Jerry Jones was so giddy afterward that he joked about firing those security guards.

Five years later, Romo has yet to live up to the hope and hype of those heady days.

But another wave of "Romo-mania" may not be far away.

Romo goes into a Thanksgiving game against Miami looking on one of the best rolls of his career. He's gone three straight games without an interception, and Dallas has won them all, pushing the Cowboys into a tie for first place in the NFC East.

The timing is great for him as he's made a tradition of shining on this holiday. Romo is 4-0 on Thanksgivings, having thrown 12 touchdowns and just two interceptions. (He missed last year's game because of a broken collarbone.)

Miami presents an intriguing challenge.

The Dolphins are only 3-7, but they've won three straight and haven't allowed a touchdown in any of those games. Plus, their roster, coaching staff and front office are filled with guys who worked with Romo in Dallas, perhaps giving them a degree of insight that goes beyond the usual scouting reports.

It starts at the top, with Miami general manager Jeff Ireland having been on the staff when the Cowboys signed Romo after he went undrafted. Dolphins coach Tony Sparano was Dallas' offensive line coach and play-caller when Romo replaced Drew Bledsoe as the starter in 2006 ? including that five-TD performance against Tampa Bay on Thanksgiving ? and he remained on the staff in 2007, when current Cowboys coach Jason Garrett took over as offensive coordinator.

"First of all is he's an outstanding player," Sparano said. "He's a guy that from Day 1 down there has been able to get that team moving. ... I think he's got a good relationship with a lot of his players there. And those guys obviously trust his leadership."

At his best, Romo can be a Brett Favre-like gunslinger, turning seemingly doomed plays into highlight-reel touchdowns. He did so several times Sunday against Washington by relying on a nifty spin move to his left.

"I always thought Tony always had eyes in the back of his head, which was good for a line coach," Sparano said. "But he's got a good sense about him. He extends plays. ... That stuff can hurt (opponents)."

That stuff also has hurt the Cowboys.

Dallas has three narrow losses this season and Romo's turnovers were to blame for the first two. Garrett's reluctance to unleash him with a narrow lead at New England paved the way for the Patriots' late comeback.

The low point came in Week 4, when Romo threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns, plus a third interception, while giving away a 24-point lead at home against Detroit. It was the biggest blown lead in franchise history.

Now look at what Romo has done since then.

In six games, he has two interceptions. That matches the cleanest stretch of his career. Only this one is better because he's also thrown more touchdowns, 12. That includes three in each of the last two games, and he's done while top receiver Miles Austin has been out with a hamstring injury.

"Sometimes when guys focus on taking care of the football they go into a shell, they don't make any plays. So they're not making any mistakes, but they're really not doing anything either," said Garrett, a former quarterback. "I think we've all seen Tony's been able to strike that balance. ... He's made a lot of significant plays in the last few weeks that have allowed us to win ballgames."

The rapid rise of rookie running back DeMarco Murray has helped balance the offense, giving defenses more of a challenge. Romo also has recovered from a broken rib and torn lung suffered in Week 2.

Just in time for the holidays.

Penn State picks ex-FBI chief for internal inquiry

Former FBI director Louis Freeh, tapped to lead Penn State's investigation into the child sex-abuse allegations against a former assistant football coach, said his inquiry will go as far back as 1975, a much longer period than a grand jury report issued earlier this month.

Freeh was named Monday to oversee the university board of trustees' internal investigation into the abuse allegations that ultimately led to the ouster of longtime football coach Joe Paterno and university President Graham Spanier.

Freeh said his goal was to conduct a comprehensive, fair and quick review. His team of former FBI agents, federal prosecutors and others has already begun the process of reading the grand jury report and looking at records.

"We will immediately report any evidence of criminality to law enforcement authorities," said Freeh, who has no direct connection to Penn State.

Penn State has faced criticism since announcing that its internal investigation would be led by two university trustees, Merck pharmaceutical company CEO Kenneth Frazier and state Education Secretary Ronald Tomalis.

Former student: Sandusky he knew is not a 'monster'

Faculty members on Friday called for an independent investigation of how the university handled abuse allegations, and the faculty senate endorsed a resolution asking for an independent investigation.

In announcing Freeh's appointment, Frazier stressed the former FBI director's independence. Freeh will be empowered to investigate employees up to and including the board of trustees itself, Frazier said.

"No one is above scrutiny," Frazier said. "He has complete rein to follow any lead, to look into every corner of the university to get to the bottom of what happened and then to make recommendations that will help ensure that it never happens again."

Freeh said he had been assured there would be "no favoritism." He called that assurance "the main condition of my engagement."

Second nonprofit sent kids to Sandusky charity

Former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is accused of molesting eight boys over a 15-year period beginning in the mid-1990s. Authorities say some assaults happened on campus and were reported to administrators but not to police.

Authorities say Sandusky, who retired from Penn State in 1999, met the children through The Second Mile, a youth charity that he started in 1977. By going back as far as 1975, Freeh's investigation would cover the entire time The Second Mile has existed and 24 of the 30 years that Sandusky worked at Penn State.

Amid the scandal, Penn State's trustees ousted Spanier and Paterno. The trustees said Spanier and Paterno failed to act after a graduate assistant claimed he saw Sandusky sexually abusing a young boy in a campus shower in 2002.

Sandusky to NBC: "I am innocent of those charges"

Paterno, who has the most wins of any major college football coach, has conceded he should have done more. Spanier has said he would have reported a crime if he had suspected one had been committed.

Sandusky has said he is innocent. He has acknowledged he showered with boys but said he never molested them.

Former school administrators Tim Curley and Gary Schultz are charged with not properly alerting authorities to suspected abuse and with perjury. They maintain their innocence.

Freeh founded an investigation firm, Freeh Group International Solutions, after leading the FBI from 1993 to 2001. He previously served six years as a special agent.

After his time at the FBI, Freeh also did work for credit card giant MBNA, which has business relationships with Penn State and its alumni association. But a spokeswoman for Freeh's investigation said in a statement that it would not compromise the probe. The statement said Freeh has "no previous personal connection to Penn State" and had no role in negotiating MBNA's longstanding business deal with the school.

Freeh's law firm was hired to look into the bribery case involving FIFA's presidential election. Soccer's governing body banned candidate Mohamed bin Hammam for life for bribing voters. The ruling body also banned 11 Caribbean soccer leaders and disciplined others in the corruption scandal.

Freeh said he spoke with Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly on Sunday night and was determined not to interfere with the ongoing criminal case. A spokesman for Kelly said she was aware of the Penn State trustees' special committee, but declined comment about it.

Gov. Tom Corbett called Freeh's selection "a good one," noting his familiarity with grand juries and the role of prosecutors.

Rod Erickson, Penn State's new president, also lauded the selection. He vowed complete cooperation and said Freeh's findings "will prompt immediate actions for which I will remain responsible."

Freeh will report to a special committee comprised of six university trustees; Dan Hagen, chair of the university's faculty senate; Rodney Hughes, a doctoral student in higher education at Penn State; and retired Air Force Col. and astronaut Guion Bluford, a 1964 Penn State graduate.

Officials also announced that anyone who has information related to the probe can contact investigators at a telephone hotline - 855-290-3382 - and a special email, PSUhelp(at)freehgroup.com.

Meanwhile, Penn State police have referred a report of an indecent assault at an outdoor swimming pool building to the attorney general's office.

A police log noted the report referred to an incident that occurred sometime between June 1, 2000, and Aug. 30, 2000. The report was made to campus police Wednesday and was noted on Thursday's police log.

When asked if the report was related to allegations against Sandusky, Penn State Police Chief Tyrone Parham said Monday: "We can never describe anything related to a victim or suspect."

State open records laws do not require Penn State to release the full police report.

A state lawmaker who represents the State College area said he was sponsoring a bill that would reverse the exemption - which currently applies to Penn State and three other universities that rely heavily on state funding but are independently run.

Rep. Kerry Benninghoff said a "more open climate" might prevent future scandals.

Search narrowed for Higgs: does it exist?

GENEVA | Wed Nov 23, 2011 3:34pm EST

GENEVA (Reuters) - CERN physicists have moved the focus of their search for the Higgs boson, the particle many think gave the universe form after the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago, to a narrow band on the mass spectrum, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

And science bloggers close to the research center are suggesting it might be clear by mid-December that the boson is a chimera and some other mechanism to explain how matter changed to mass at the birth of the cosmos will have to be sought.

"The higher mass region has now been virtually ruled out, but the Higgs it could still be anywhere in the lower 114-141 GeV range," James Gillies of CERN, the 21-nation European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva, told Reuters.

Physicists such as Italian Tomasso Dorigo, who works with CERN, now say that - if it exists - the Higgs should be found at around 120 GeV (here),

while independent British researcher Philip Gibbs goes for 140 GeV on his site, vixra.org/.

GeV, or giga electron-volts, is a term used in physics to quantify particle energy fields. Searches for the Higgs in CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the now-closed Tevatron at the U.S. Fermilab have ranged up to 476 GeV.

Results from analysis up to the end of June in the LHC, which smashes together millions of particles per second at a tiny fraction under the speed of light, were presented at a conference in Paris last week.

But these slipped by almost unnoticed even by many specialists in the particle physics community which has been more focused recently on an Italian research centre's claim to have recorded neutrino particles moving faster than light.

The latest Higgs findings were compiled jointly by two usually competing LHC research teams, ATLAS and CMS, and Gillies said both were working hard to try to complete analysis of data from the collider gathered up to the start of November.

CERN COUNCIL

The 21-nation CERN's ruling Council meets from December 12 to December 16 and any concrete sign of the Higgs - whose existence was postulated four decades ago by British scientist Peter Higgs - would be reported during that session.

But CERN physicist and blogger Pauline Gagnon said on Wednesday that the low mass range, where scientists had always thought they would find the particle, was also the one where it would be more difficult to see.

The Higgs, she said, "is playing hard to catch." (here

The Higgs, she said, "is playing hard to catch." (here higgs-boson-search/)

"It might be that it does not even exist," she said, a possibility already raised by other researchers and by CERN chief Rolf Heuer.

This echoed comments by Columbia University mathematical physicist Peter Woit last weekend in his Higgs Non-News blog (www.math.columbia.edu/~woit/wordpress/?p=4161).

"It seems not impossible that the results available (publicly or not...) mid-December will come within striking distance of ruling out the Higgs (at 90 pct or 95 pct level) over the relevant low mass range," Woit wrote.

The particle is part of the 30-year-old Standard Model of particle physics that seeks to explain how the universe works at its most basic level, but it is almost the only element of the model whose existence had not yet been proven.

If it is not found, said Gagnon, "we need to move on to explore the next set of possibilities."

One suggestion came this week from a self-proclaimed non-scientist in a comment on the Quantum Diaries blog. "It will be in essence ethereal, kind of like a spirit being, existing for the purpose of holding everything together," he wrote.

USC holds off No. 4 Oregon 38-35 (AP)

EUGENE, Ore. ? Matt Barkley was confident that No. 18 USC was headed for an upset all along, even when fourth-ranked Oregon mounted a comeback.

"We expected to shock everybody except ourselves," he said after throwing for 323 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-35 victory over the Ducks on Saturday night.

The loss snapped a 21-game winning streak for Oregon (9-2, 7-1 Pac-12) at Autzen Stadium, which was the longest in the nation. It also stopped a 19-game winning streak in conference games.

But even more significantly, the loss derailed Oregon's hope for a second-straight berth in the BCS championship game. The Ducks were poised to move up in the BCS standings after No. 2 Oklahoma State lost to Iowa State 37-31on Friday night.

"I think this was a defining game for us," Barkley said. "We set ourselves apart on both sides of the ball."

Trailing 24-7 in the third quarter, Oregon launched a comeback and narrowed the margin to just three points on LaMichael James' 1-yard touchdown run with 7:05 left in the fourth quarter.

Barkley led his team to the Oregon 15, but Marc Tyler fumbled and the ball was recovered by the Ducks with 2:54 to go. Oregon marched down the field but Alejandro Maldondado's 37-yard field goal attempt, which was brought 5 yards closer because of a USC penalty, went wide left.

Afterward, Ducks' fans stood stunned while the Trojans (9-2, 6-2) celebrated on the field. Once in the locker room, the team was so boisterous that they at times drowned out coach Lane Kiffin speaking to reporters in an adjoining room.

The victory was huge for USC, which cannot play in the postseason because of NCAA sanctions.

"We needed this," Barkley said.

Robert Woods, who was held out of some practices this week with ankle and shoulder injuries, caught seven passes for 53 yards and two scores. Freshman Marqise Lee caught eight passes for 187 yards and a score.

Darron Thomas threw for 265 yards and a score for Oregon, while Kenjon Barner ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns. The Ducks, ranked fifth in the nation with nearly 292 rushing yards per game, were held to 209 yards by USC's defense.

"We lost a game," said James, who rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown. "Life goes on."

Against the Trojans, Oregon was playing catch up from the start.

The Trojans scored first on Barkley's 59-yard touchdown pass to Lee in the first quarter, then added Barkley's 12-yard scoring pass to Woods early in the second to go up 14-0.

The Ducks didn't' look like themselves until an efficient scoring drive midway through the second quarter. Thomas hit freshman Colt Lyerla with a 35-yard pass before hitting fellow frosh De'Anthony Thomas with a 29-yarder for the touchdown. The seven-play drive covered 88 yards in just 2:15.

But USC answered with Barkley's 4-yard touchdown pass to Woods. The TD, Barkley's 73rd, moved him past Carson Palmer for second on Southern California's career touchdown list. Matt Leinart had 99 for the Trojans.

The Ducks had a chance to narrow it before the half, but De'Anthony Thomas was out of bounds when he pulled down a Darron Thomas pass to the end zone. On the next play, James fumbled and the ball was recovered by USC.

James, who dislocated his elbow earlier in the season and missed two games, was hit in the arm on the play, and was holding the elbow as he was helped up by trainers.

The Trojans opened the second half with Andre Heidari's 26-yard field goal to make it 24-7, but Oregon again showed a flash of its usual speedy offense with a quick drive capped by Barner's 10-yard touchdown run.

The Ducks, known for their second half adjustments, couldn't slow USC's momentum and the Trojans scored on the subsequent series with Marc Tyler's 3-yard run. Barkley added a 5-yard scoring pass to Randall Telfer to make it 38-14.

De'Anthony Thomas narrowed it again for the Ducks with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and the Autzen Stadium crowd got back into the game with 3:28 left in the third quarter.

Barner had an 8-yard touchdown run to close the Ducks to within 38-27 with 12:44 left in the game. The Trojans ate a lot of time up with their next series, but Barkley was intercepted by John Boyett, putting the Ducks in business on their own 40. Oregon scored on James' 1-yard run, and the 2-point conversion pass was ruled good after review to make it 38-35.

"I never felt comfortable," Kiffin said. "You can't get comfortable. They're just so explosive."

It was USC's first victory in the state of Oregon since 2005.

USC has one final game, next week against Los Angeles rival UCLA. The league's southern representative in the inaugural Pac-12 championship is still up for grabs between Arizona State, Utah and UCLA.

The Ducks still need only to win at home next week against Oregon State to clinch the Pac-12 North Division.

After the game, coach Chip Kelly was asked if perhaps Oregon's guard was down against the Trojans after a decisive victory over then-No. 3 Stanford last week.

"I didn't feel like it was a hangover. The credit goes to that other team. That's a good football team," said Kelly, who after the game went to the Trojans locker room to congratulate USC assistant Monte Kiffin, Lane's father.

The loss was Chip Kelly's first at Autzen as Oregon's head coach.

There were cheers before the game started when NBA stars LeBron James, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony and several others showed up on the sidelines. James and Anthony even tossed around a football.

The players have been working out at Nike headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., just outside of Portland.

One of the main reasons is that businesses ? whether it?s the CEO, top-tier management or otherwise ? are looking at social media as an individual medium, much like PR or marketing.

This is where the cracks start to appear. Social media benefits companies the most when it?s used as?part?of an?integrated?campaign.

Social media is also perfect for reaching out and connecting with your audience, as opposed to just selling them something. Sure, you?re still selling your brand or product ? but this time, it?s in an ?encouraging to ask questions? approach instead of ?this is us and you?ll like it? one.

Accepting that social media needs to be approached as an integrated strategy rather than a standalone campaign is the first step businesses need to take. After that, the job gets a little bit easier.

Define Your Audience

Just like any market or product, social media is made up of different audiences. As a business owner, you wouldn?t launch a new product onto a more traditional marketplace without some in-depth market research first ? don?t ignore this on social media.

Knowing your audience is key to succeeding in business social media. You need to know if your audience are participants or promoters. Why the need to differentiate? Simple -

  • Participants?are social media users that may use numerous social media sites and applications, but don?t really ?take part? in the medium. They?re like the visitors to your business website that may purchase something and then interact with you no further. There?s nothing wrong with this ? but as a method of expanding your brand, you may need to look elsewhere.
  • Promoters?are the users that like to share information ? whether it?s recommending something via Twitter or their blog, if they come across something they like they will pass that information on. This is where your use of social media can help build your name. Just remember that social media works both ways. Don?t try and cheat the system ? give back just as much (more, even) as you receive.

Have a Clear and Defined Goal

Another area where businesses are failing to adapt social media to their needs is that they don?t have a clear goal on what they want to achieve. Many hear the phrase ?social media? and immediately feel they need to be a part of this buzz, jump straight in without any forward thinking, and are then disappointed with the (lack of) results.

Ask yourself who you want to connect with and why, and then research the areas of social media that are most relevant to your needs. Demographics are one of the key points of knowledge for any campaign ? make sure you know where your demographics are playing online. A?social map?can help here.

Again, though, don?t try and play the system ? cheaters will soon be found out, and your brand can suffer irreparable damage if seen as merely a self-promotional company on social media.

Tools of the Trade

Once you have your audience and your goal set out, you need to use the tools that will help you the most. There are numerous available, and this is where building your social media connections can help, by advising what ones they use and what results they achieve.

Some of the best free examples of business tools include?Monitter?(which allows you a view on Twitter discussions of keywords);?Google Alerts?(giving you insight into what?s being said about you); and?Social Mention?(letting you gauge social reactions and reach to your topic or keywords and allowing you to jump in on conversations elsewhere).

Getting into social media shouldn?t be a hard decision for businesses to make ? it?s either right for you or it isn?t. Social media is a long-term strategy, not? a short-term fire sale.

Understand that, and you begin to understand social media.

Despite loss, Lawlor continues reign as UFC walkout king

At UFC 139 on Saturday night, Tom Lawlor pulled out another walkout to remember. The day after attending weigh-ins dressed as Steven Seagal, Lawlor walked out the Olivia Newton-John classic "Let's Get Physical," and used an exercise band to pump up along the way.

Despite loss, Lawlor continues reign as UFC walkout king

Unfortunately for Lawlor, the walkout didn't help him win his fight. Chris Weidman choked him unconscious in the first round. Still, kudos to any fighter who brings Olivia Newton-John to the Octagon.

LPCC Wins Four Communications Awards :: Lincoln Park Chamber ...

Posted on November 16, 2011 in LPCC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHICAGO (November 16, 2011) ? The Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce (LPCC) is honored to announce that the Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (IACCE) presented the North Side chamber with first place in two categories and second place in two additional categories at the third annual IACCE Communications Awards program on Thursday, November 3, 2011.? The Communications Awards were presented at the three-day Fall Conference highlighting the successes and challenges chambers are facing today. More than 100 chamber executives from across the state were present.

?The LPCC is honored to be presented with four awards from the IACCE,? said LPCC President and CEO Kim Schilf.? ?Illinois is home to communities large and small, represented by chambers of commerce large and small providing innovative direction and communication tools; being presented an award among our peers is truly humbling.?

In June 2011, the LPCC partnered with TimeOut Chicago, the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Chicago History Museum, the Clark Street Special Service Area (SSA) #23, Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Vesta to develop a piece that highlighted the many places to go, things to do and insider information about the Lincoln Park neighborhood.? This brochure was distributed through our community partners, the Chicago Office of Tourism, hotels and other high traffic locations. The brochure was also included as an insert in TimeOut Chicago magazines. Being presented first place for this inaugural piece recognizes its impact on the community. A cooperative piece being honored with first place by the IACCE recognizes the value of strong connections.

The LPCC was also presented first place honors in the IACCE?s Marketing Campaign category. This category honors chambers of commerce ?for a media mix pertaining to promotion of the Chamber itself or a specific Chamber event.? Through things like business advocacy and a comprehensive marketing strategy, the LPCC strives to promote the Lincoln Park community and its businesses as much as, or more, than the organization itself.

The LPCC?s community guide and membership directory, Discover Lincoln Park 2011, as well as the website ? www.lincolnparkchamber.com ? were presented with second place awards for their content and layout in the mid-sized chamber group. These pieces are valuable in the promotion of Lincoln Park businesses and the neighborhood?s assets as well as connecting several audiences to the diverse information they need on a daily basis. Discover Lincoln Park 2011 was distributed door-to-door to 10,000 residents and shared with high traffic areas similar to the TimeOut Chicago piece.

?As chambers of commerce continue to adapt their programming and other services to local businesses, communication is paramount to the success of both the organization and its members,? Schilf continued.? ?While we accept these awards as a singular organization, we encourage chambers of commerce from across Chicagoland and Illinois to work together to support the needs of each other and their respective business communities.?

The IACCE created the Communications Awards to provide Illinois chambers of commerce access to statewide recognition for their materials as well as offering another way for chambers to learn from each other.?

WikiLeaks mom calls for Australian intervention (AP)

CANBERRA, Australia ? Julian Assange's mother has joined protesters in Australia's capital demanding the government oppose a possible U.S. extradition of her son in a WikiLeaks investigation.

Christine Assange protested with scores of people outside Parliament House during President Barack Obama's visit Thursday.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange filed papers in a British court this week in a last-ditch effort to stave off extradition to Sweden in a sex-crime case. He fears the United States will then extradite him from Sweden to face possible charges over WikiLeaks' release of classified U.S. documents.

Assange is Australian. His 60-year-old mother lives in rural Queensland state.

Dell Latitude E6420-ATG

The Dell Latitude E6420-ATG ($3,348 direct) business laptop is built like a tank, designed to venture where other laptops fear to tread. From its semi-rugged construction to its beefy second-generation Intel Core i7 processor, this laptop is made to take a beating while providing all of the functionality you need from a professional laptop. It's sleeker than its fully-rugged counterparts, like the Getac V200 ($5,177 direct, 3.5 stars) and Dell Latitude E6420 XFR ($5,612 direct, 4 stars), which sport a bulky frame and bumpers on every corner. However, the Latitude E6420-ATG is still one tough laptop that will be suitable for the business worker at home, in the field, or in the boardroom.

Design
The E6420-ATG is designed to withstand extreme conditions. It's rated for a variety of harsh environments, including dust, humidity, and vibration. The stringent MIL-STD 810G testing requirements means that even if you drop it, smack it, bump it, or spill on it, you know you'll still be able to fire it up and get your work done.

The triple-metal construction includes a magnesium-alloy skeleton, an anodized aluminum lid, and a powder-coat magnesium-alloy bottom panel. This same metal construction extends to the steel hinges and zinc-alloy latch mechanism. The outer edges of the lid are also covered with an additional protective layer similar to the lining used to protect the interior of truck beds. All of that armor gets heavy, though. The E6420-ATG tips the scales at 6.4 pounds, which is considerably heavier than most 14-inch mainstream laptops, but it's still lighter than the 9.38-pound Dell E6420 XFR. The E6420-ATG measures 1.48 by 14.07 by 9.7 inches (HWD), and can be equipped with an optional briefcase-style handle for easier carrying.

The 14-inch display is nearly 2 inches larger than the screen of the Getac V200, and that extra real-estate allows for multitasking with multiple windows. The screen is made with outdoor viewing in mind, with wide viewing angles and brightness that offers visibility even in direct sunlight. The 1,366-by-768 resolution also means that photos and videos can display at 720p. The E6420-ATG also has impact-resistant front glass protecting the screen against dings and scratches.

The keyboard is traditionally laid out, eschewing the chiclet-style used in other systems. The keyboard is also spill-resistant, and you'll be able to use it in low-light conditions thanks to an adjustable backlight. A pointing stick and trackpad offer two forms of cursor control, and the trackpad supports two-finger scrolling.

Features
One standout feature of the E6420-ATG, a 256GB solid-state drive (SSD), also provides an extra level of rugged durability. Not only does an SSD offer faster performance, the lack of moving parts makes for a more durable and resilient drive than spinning hard disks. It also offers more storage space than you'll find in other rugged laptops, like the 80GB SSD found in the Getac V200, and the 120GB spinning drive found in the Getac B300.

The E6420-ATG offers a conventional selection of ports: three USB 2.0 ports, a USB/eSATA combination port, VGA and HDMI video outputs, ports for Ethernet and a regular telephone line, and a SmartCard reader. Along with headphone and microphone connections and an SD card reader, these ports are all protected from the elements by heavy-duty port covers. Wireless connectivity comes in the form of 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

While the E6420-ATG may have a chunky design and several layers of protection, the hard drive and desktop are spare and uncluttered. The only pre-installed pieces of software you'll find on the Latitude E6420-ATG are Microsoft's Bing toolbar and a starter version of Office 2010.

Performance
Dell Latitude E6420-ATG The E6420-ATG is equipped with a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7-2620M dual-core processor and 4GB of RAM. While it went head-to-head with the similarly configured Dell E6420 XFR on performance tests, the E6420 XFR came out slightly ahead, primarily because of its extra 2GB of RAM packed in. In Cinebench R11.5, the E6420-ATG scored 3.06 points, an insignificant 0.06 points ahead of the Dell E6420 XFR. In media creation tasks the E6420 XFR clearly had a leg up when it came to video in our Handbrake test, encoding a video 32 seconds faster than the E6420-ATG (2:11). Our Photoshop CS5 test yielded less dramatic differences, with the E6420-ATG completing the test in 3 minutes 37 seconds, just 5 seconds behind the competition.

Intel's batch of second-generation Core i processors feature an upgrade to its integrated graphics, which make for mild improvements when it comes to handling 3D content. In our 3DMark 06 graphics test, the E5420-ATG scored 4,380 at medium resolution and 1,947 at higher resolution settings. Compared with the Getac V200 (which scored 1,650 at medium resolution and 1,426 at higher resolution settings), this improvement is enormous. The difference can also be seen in our gaming tests, where the E6420-ATG pumped out 20.32 frames per second (fps) in Crysis and 18.9 fps in Lost Planet 2 at medium resolution and detail settings. So you won't be playing high-end 3D games, and you probably shouldn't if this laptop is for work, but you could get away with lower-end titles like Torchlight and Team Fortress 2.

It doesn't do much good to have a durable laptop that can survive the elements if it doesn't have a battery that will survive the afternoon. The E6420-ATG comes with a giant 9-cell (97Wh) battery. It lasted 8 hours 46 minutes on MobileMark 2007, several hours longer than the Getac B300 (6:45) and Panasonic Toughbook CF-52 (5:15), though both use batteries larger than 85Wh.

It's difficult to compare such a unique laptop to any of our regular units, even where there are similarities in performance or equipment. In the end, the primary selling point of rugged laptops is their construction and durability, and as such, I have to compare to the best and most recent rugged laptops. In terms of pure performance, the E6420-ATG can easily compete against the most rugged laptops out there, like the Dell E6420 XFR, without much trouble. If budgetary constraints enter into your decision making process, you might want to instead opt for the business rugged HP Elitebook 8740w ($1,999 direct, 4 stars), but when you want uncompromising durability, the E6420-ATG is the system you'll want to get you through the storm.

BENCHMARK TEST RESULTS:

Wall St falls as euro-zone bond yields rise (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks fell on Monday as rising bond yields in Italy and other euro-zone countries reminded investors that despite changes in governments, the region's debt crisis could still spin out of control.

Banks posted the largest losses, but overall volume was unusually weak. The KBW bank index dropped 2.5 percent, with Bank of New York Mellon down more than 4 percent.

The S&P 500 found strong resistance after closing on Friday near its 200-day moving average and close to the top of a trading range the index has held for three months.

Initial relief over the appointment of a technocrat to head the new government in Italy after the resignation of Silvio Berlusconi gave way to worries that unpopular austerity measures will not be enough to fix the country's finances. For details see.

Benchmark yields in Italy, France and Spain edged higher from the end of last week and closed near session highs. Rising bond yields are being watched carefully because every rise in interest rates threatens the ability of Italy and other countries to finance themselves.

"That sign of a reversal of what had been a more favorable trend in Europe is what the (equities) market worried about today," said Jeff Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial in Boston.

"That has raised worries that European problems are not that much behind us."

Stocks have lately focused on headlines from Europe as traders react to the escalating sovereign debt crisis in the euro zone. Italian benchmark bond yields rose above 7 percent last week, a level that forced countries with a lower debt burden to seek bailouts. With debt of more than 2 trillion euros, Italy is considered too big to bail out.

Yields on 10-year Italian debt rose to 6.76 percent on Monday.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 74.70 points, or 0.61 percent, at 12,078.98. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 12.07 points, or 0.96 percent, at 1,251.78. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 21.53 points, or 0.80 percent, at 2,657.22.

At 5.5 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, the third-lowest number so far this year and down more than 30 percent from the year's daily average of just over 8 billion.

Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a ratio of 16 to 5, while on the Nasdaq, about three stocks fell for every one that rose.

Stocks continued to track the euro, which fell more than 1 percent against the dollar.

Adding to the gloom in the region, industrial production in the euro zone fell in September, the most since early 2009. Output at factories in the 17-nation group declined 2 percent for the month.

LPL Financial's Kleintop said the data mostly confirmed the market's anticipation of a mild recession in the euro zone.

Italy's debt in the credit default swap market rose to a record at the close of 569 basis points, up from 525 basis points on Friday, according to data provider Markit. This means it would cost 569,000 euros per year to insure 10 million euros of Italian debt for five years.

French and Spanish CDs costs also rose to record highs, according to Markit.

Limiting losses on the Dow, Boeing Co shares rose 1.5 percent to $67.94 after the U.S. planemaker announced a large order.

Shares of Bank of America Corp dropped 2.6 percent to $6.05 as the lender plans to sell most of its remaining stake in China Construction Bank Corp for $6.6 billion in a move to raise capital.

Bank of New York Mellon Corp fell 4.5 percent to $20.55 after it said it expects to take a hit against earnings of up to $100 million in the fourth quarter.

Monti can't yet say if Italy needs more measures (AP)

ROME ? Italy's Premier-designate Mario Monti insisted Monday it was "premature" to say if the country will require more tough measures to rescue the nation's finances and revive its economy, as he sought enough backing from political parties to form a government.

Two days after Silvio Berlusconi resigned, and with investors still nervous about Italy's credibility, Monti spent the day consulting with political parties, then told reporters he couldn't say when he would have a Cabinet lined up.

Pressured by the markets, Parliament last week gave final approval after weeks of political squabbling over emergency measures aimed at cutting spending and spurring economic growth, but it is unclear if action is enough with Italy's debt costs shooting upward.

Asked if Italy would need a "corrective" package of measures, Monti replied: "I appreciate the question, but it would be premature on my part to reply."

A few party leaders ? including some in Berlusconi's party ? have been demanding the nonpartisan Monti only last long enough to implement economic reforms, then step down so elections can be called this spring, a year ahead of schedule.

But Monti made clear that he intends to serve until spring 2013 elections, calling it counterproductive to say when he'd step down.

"If a date before (2013) is set, this haste would take away credibility from the government's actions," Monti said, adding, in the brief news conference, "I won't accept" such a condition.

Tuesday was shaping up as a crucial day for Monti to decide if he can count on Parliament's support. He meets in the morning with Italy's two largest parties in the legislature ? those of Berlusconi's conservatives and a center-left part made up of former communists and ex-Christian Democrats. Their votes would be crucial in a confidence vote, likely to come later this week, which would seal the start of Monti's government.

Monti ? an economist ? was tasked Sunday night by Italy's president with creating a government of experts capable of overhauling an ailing economy and keeping market fears over the country from threatening the existence of the euro.

But beside the clamor from some parties for elections soon, some have been insisting political figures have roles in his Cabinet. That could undo the "technocratic" character many analysts expected he would bring to his government. Monti told reporters he would take the time needed to line up a strong time, and said he hoped the markets would "temper their impatience" by his need to choose well.

Investors initially cheered Monti's appointment, though concern lingered about the sheer amount of work his new government will have to do to restore faith in the country's battered economy and finances.

Monti's government would need to implement economic reforms aimed at reviving stagnant growth to bring down public debt, stuck near 120 percent of GDP.

Some parties were looking to extract concessions in exchange for support to Monti's government.

That risks slowing the process of forming a government, after days in which Italy's political machinery ? under pressure from markets ? had moved with rare efficiency. Both houses passed fresh austerity and reform measures within two days, paving the way for Berlusconi's resignation.

Improving market confidence in Italy is crucial to the future of the eurozone as the country would be too expensive to rescue. A default on its euro1.9 trillion ($2.6 trillion) in debt would cause massive chaos in financial markets and shake the global economy.

The pressure for Italy to reform its economy is huge as it has become clear that the European Central Bank is not shielding it from the bond market turmoil.

The central bank almost halved its purchases of government bonds last week to euro4.5 billion ($6.2 billion), effectively allowing investors to run Italy's bond yields higher. The purchases are aimed at keeping a lid on borrowing rates for Italy and other eurozone countries so they won't get frozen out of financial markets, as has happened to Greece.

But the ECB is reluctant to protect governments from the market pressure, saying it is up to governments to convince investors of their economies' worth.

That pressure no doubt helped accelerate the power shift in Rome, as it did in Greece, where a new government of technocrats also took over last week. The hope is that administrations of experts not affiliated to parties will be more willing to make the tough but necessary decisions that politicians have so far balked at.

But the fact that it will take time to shape up the battered economies of Italy and Greece kept investors on edge.

On Monday, the yield on Italy's benchmark 10-year bonds fell as low as 6.28 percent in early trading but soon rose again to 6.70 percent ? still uncomfortably high and not far from the 7 percent threshold that has pushed other eurozone countries to seek bailouts.

The longer these borrowing rates stay high, the more difficult it will be for Italy to reduce its huge debt pile.

That was apparent in a bond auction on Monday, when Italy raised euro3 billion ($4.1 billion) in the sale of five-year bonds at an interest rate of 6.29 percent, the highest level since 1997 and up from 5.32 percent at a similar auction a month ago.

Italy will need those borrowing rates to come down in coming months to avoid a big increase in its interest costs ? some euro200 billion ($273 billion) in public debt comes due through the end of April.

Analysts say Berlusconi's exit from the premier's office ? although he still serves in Parliament ? and Monti's new government will only be the start of a long process of change in Italy.

"It will take years of unprecedentedly tight fiscal policy to get the public finances on a stable footing," said Ben May, economist at Capital Economics.

Monti, a 68-year-old economics professor, proved his mettle as European competition commissioner in the 1990s, has the support of investors and the EU, but several Italian parties were still attaching strings to their endorsement.

Antonio Di Pietro promised that his small Italy of Values party, which has been in opposition to Berlusconi, "won't block the birth of a Monti government." But he made clear a commitment to make electoral reform a priority of the next government would weigh heavily when deciding whether to back Monti in the confidence vote.

He is also pushing for early elections once the electoral system is changed.
